Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give my two cents about the last Christmas street concert organized at the local community park on the 24th of December.

The concert was well organized and very entertaining, most especially the talent hunt aspect where upcoming comedians and musician were trying showcase their talent for the prize money. Another important highlight of the event was the inter street challenge, it was fun watching the short drama presentation from each street to win the award for most creative street in the community. I must say, it was the most interesting part of the show.

I will like that to suggest that rather than just given only the winners of various competition award, other contestants should also be given incentive or smaller prize to appreciate their effort. furthermore, educational activities like spelling bees and quiz should be introduce to allow youngster participate in the event.

I look forward to experience a more creative, educating and entertaining concept this year.

Yours faithfully,

Ramatu Afolayan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you identify the Christmas street concert, explain that you enjoyed the talent hunt and inter-street drama challenge, and suggest prizes for other contestants and educational activities. These are relevant, specific details, and your positive response to the event is clear. However, the task describes a series of free summer concerts, while your letter refers to a Christmas concert on 24 December; this makes the event you attended seem inconsistent with the prompt. The reasons for enjoyment are more fully explained than the suggestions, which are presented briefly without explaining how they would improve participation or the event. Keep the concert details aligned with the scenario and develop each suggestion with a short explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening purpose, a paragraph describing the concert, a paragraph of suggestions, and an appropriate closing. This makes the main points easy to locate, and phrases such as “Another important highlight” help signal a new detail. The progression is generally logical, though some links feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “I will like that to suggest” interrupts the transition into your recommendations, and “furthermore” needs a capital letter after the full stop. The final sentence refers to “this year” after discussing next summer, which also weakens the time sequence. Use simpler, more direct transitions and ensure references to the event and its timing remain consistent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing an event and giving feedback, including “well organized,” “entertaining,” “talent hunt,” “inter street challenge,” and “creative.” These choices help convey what happened and what you valued. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “two cents,” but this is informal for a letter to the council; “feedback” would suit the purpose better. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “musician” for multiple performers, “prize money” where “prize” may be more natural, and “a more creative, educating and entertaining concept.” Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “educational activities” and “a more varied programme.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sentence that explains the talent hunt and another that describes the street drama presentations. The meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “musician were trying showcase” needs a plural noun and an infinitive marker (“musicians were trying to showcase”), while “I will like that to suggest” has an incorrect structure; write “I would like to suggest.” In “activities … should be introduce,” use the past participle “introduced,” and “I look forward to experience” should be “look forward to experiencing.” Check agreement and verb patterns carefully, especially after modal verbs and fixed expressions.
