IELTS Writing Task 1 question

This summer your local council organised a series of free concerts in your local park. You attended one of the concerts. The council has asked for feedback about the concerts.

Write a letter to the council giving your feedback. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. The reason for my letter today is to give feedback on Eminem's concert.

I attended Eminem's concert which was on 5th July and i really enjoyed it. The decoration of the park and music system was top of the line. Tickets were free along with some freebies like caps and braceletes which I liked the most. Although, the entry was free but food vendors over there hiked prices of water bottles and hotdogs which was unacceptable.

In future, if you plan to organise shows again just have a meeting with local vendors and select 2 or 3 out of them who are struggling with their business, and let all of them know that this is for everyone to enjoy it and not for businesses to make huge profits out of this. I think you will take note of this.

Thank You

John Wick

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify Eminem’s concert and its date, explain that you enjoyed the park setting, sound system and free gifts, and suggest a change for next summer. These details make the feedback relevant and give the council a clear sense of your experience. The complaint about vendors raising prices is also a useful basis for your recommendation. However, the enjoyment is explained mainly as a list, and the proposal to choose vendors who are “struggling with their business” is not fully connected to how this would prevent excessive prices. Explain what rules or price limits the council should set, and develop why the concert’s features made it enjoyable, to make the ideas more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall order: it opens with its purpose, describes the concert, then moves to a suggestion and closing. The contrast introduced by “Although” helps connect the free entry with your concern about food prices, and the paragraphs separate the main stages of the message. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “Although, the entry was free but” combines two contrasting structures, while “In future” moves directly into a long recommendation without clearly signalling how it follows from the complaint. The final “I think you will take note of this” is also a somewhat abrupt ending. Use one contrast marker at a time and make the relationship between the problem and proposed solution explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes some specific expressions, such as “food vendors,” “hiked prices,” and “freebies,” which help convey the experience. You also communicate the main points clearly. Some choices are informal or imprecise for a letter to the council: “top of the line” and “freebies” sound conversational, while “select 2 or 3 out of them” is awkwardly phrased. There are also spelling errors in “braceletes” and inconsistent capitalization of “i.” Aim for more precise, appropriately formal wording, such as describing the sound system as “excellent” and referring to “complimentary caps.” Check spelling and choose expressions that suit a formal feedback letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “Eminem’s concert which was on 5th July” and the conditional suggestion beginning “if you plan to organise shows again.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. In “Although, the entry was free but…,” the contrast is incorrectly constructed; use either “Although entry was free, …” or “Entry was free, but …”. The long recommendation beginning “just have a meeting” also shifts into an imperative without a clear grammatical link to the opening conditional. Capitalise “I” consistently and punctuate the closing appropriately. More controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy and flow.
