IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Arsh,
Hope you are doing great! I am already missing Vancouver and my dearest friend. I can't thank you enough for making my trip so memorable.
I know, I was there unannounced, but, thanks for always helping me and welcoming me with a warm heart. I really needed it to figure out the city and finishing up my job-related tasks.
Although Vancouver can never beat Toronto's downtown,I loved the Stanley park, we don't have such parks in Brampton. The best part was the bicycling around the pond. After so many years, riding bike like a toddler was a wonderful experience .
Why don't you join me for thanksgiving? We have some very popular locations for see-sighting here.
Together, we can roam around the city like we used to do in back home and can make some more unforgettable memories that we will cherish later.
I will not take no for answer. Excited to meet you soon!
With love,
Mandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a friendly and appropriate tone throughout. You clearly express gratitude for the hospitality in Vancouver, share specific positive memories like visiting Stanley Park, and extend a clear invitation for Thanksgiving. The purpose of the letter is evident from the start, and the ideas are well-developed for a personal correspondence. The tone is consistently informal and warm, which is perfectly suited to the task requirements. You have covered all necessary points, including the reflection on the past trip and the proposal for the future visit, ensuring the reader understands your intentions clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You move smoothly from expressing gratitude to sharing memories and finally to the invitation. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct topics. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'After so many years', and 'Together' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. While some transitions are simple, they are effective for this type of informal letter. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the ideas is easy to follow throughout the text, meeting the requirements for a well-structured response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'unannounced', 'memorable', and 'cherish' are used correctly and add to the personal tone of the letter. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'see-sighting' (which should be 'sightseeing') and 'in back home' (which should be 'back home'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound natural in an informal context, such as 'catch up' or 'reminisce'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'finishing up my job-related tasks' (should be 'to finish up') and 'riding bike' (should be 'riding a bike'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'downtown,I loved', where a space is missing after the comma. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on article usage (e.g., 'the Stanley park' should be 'Stanley Park') and ensuring consistent verb forms in parallel structures.
