IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear sir/madam,

I am writing to provide information about a social activity that I am planning to start in mu local area. The main purpose of this activity to bring people of different communties together to share their knowledge, life lessons and build up new relationships with others.

I am planning to organise a weekly community meet-up where local residents can participate in activities such as group discussions, board games, outdoor walks and cultural events. This will give people an opportunity to meet others, share their experiences and spend time together.

The first meeting will take place next Sunday at 4:00 p.m.at the local community centre.Everyone living in the area will be welcome to attend the meeting , regardless of their age or background. I would really appreciate it if you could publish this information in your newspaper so that more local people can learn about the activity and participate.

I will be very thankful to you for this.

Yours faithfully,

Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all the required parts of the formal letter task. You clearly explain the purpose of the social activity, which is to bring people of different communities together through shared knowledge and relationships. You also provide specific details about the nature of the weekly meet-ups, such as group discussions and board games, and state the time and location of the first meeting next Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Finally, you appropriately outline your request for the newspaper to publish this information. The tone is formal and appropriate for a letter to an editor, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant to the prompt. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for a high band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression of ideas, moving logically from the introduction of the social activity to the specific details of the event, and finally to the request for publication. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the message. Cohesive devices such as 'The main purpose of this', 'This will give people', and 'The first meeting' are managed well to guide the reader through the text. Referencing is clear and unambiguous throughout the letter, ensuring smooth transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for a general correspondence task. You successfully incorporate relevant topical terms and phrases such as 'social activity', 'local residents', 'cultural events', and 'community centre'. There are minor typographical and spelling errors, such as 'mu' instead of 'my' and a missing space in 'communties' and 'p.m.at', but these do not impede communication. While the lexical range is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely, the use of less common or more sophisticated vocabulary is somewhat limited, which places this response comfortably in the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to provide information about a social activity that I am planning to start' and 'I would really appreciate it if you could publish this information'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, most notably a missing verb in the second sentence ('The main purpose of this activity to bring') and minor spacing issues around commas and periods. However, the majority of your sentences are clear, and these minor errors rarely impede communication or cause strain for the reader.
