IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Rui Camacho,

I am writing this letter regarding a cafeteria, which is going to be shut down in the coming week due to fewer purchases by the workers.

The cafe is used lesser by workers because they only get a single break of 30 minutes during a shift of 6 hours so they spend it on eating their lunch. Apart from this, the shop does not have fixed operational hours and most of the times employees are unaware if the cafeteria is open or not.

However, cafeteria near the office is very essential as whenever someone gets late in the morning or did not get enough time to prepare food, they usually get a take-away from there. If the management close down the only eating place near workplace, workers will be forced to use expensive food applications to order food during lunch breaks.

Lastly, I would kindly suggest it if the company could set-up the permanent hours for the cafeteria it will be used by workers significantly. Also, providing a appropriate seating area near the shop will attract more employees to use it.

I hope the company will consider my suggestions and consider them for betterment.

Yours sincerely,

Sukhmanpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task. The purpose of the letter is clearly established in the opening sentence, addressing Mr Rui Camacho regarding the impending closure of the cafeteria. The student provides logical reasons for the low usage, such as the short 30-minute break and irregular operational hours, and supports these points by explaining the negative consequences of the closure, such as reliance on expensive food apps. Furthermore, constructive suggestions are offered to management regarding fixed operating hours and a seating area. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to management, and the position is clear throughout. Although some ideas could be slightly more elaborated, the overall response fully meets the requirements for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: introduction, reasons for low usage, impact of closure, suggestions, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with transition words like 'Apart from this', 'However', and 'Lastly' guiding the reader through the arguments effectively. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct thoughts and proposals. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking sentences could enhance fluency even further. Overall, the structural flow aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'impending closure' equivalents and phrases like 'operational hours', 'take-away', and 'expensive food applications'. Less common lexical items are attempted, including 'significantly', 'betterment', and 'essential'. There are occasional awkward word choices, such as 'used lesser' instead of 'less frequently', and 'set-up the permanent hours' instead of 'establish fixed hours'. However, these vocabulary errors do not impede communication, and the overall lexical range is adequate for a solid Band 6.5 performance, rounded to 6.0 based on precision frequency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over conditional and relative clauses, such as in 'If the management close down the only eating place near workplace, workers will be forced to...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, for instance, 'cafeteria, which is going to be shut down' (missing article), 'used lesser by workers', and 'providing a appropriate seating area' (an appropriate). Additionally, subject-verb agreement occasionally slips, as seen in 'management close' or 'did not get enough time'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, placing the response comfortably within Band 6.0.
