IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, many large international companies give their employees the opportunity to live and work in another country for a certain period. This development can be beneficial for both employees and companies.
For employees, working in another country can provide valuable professional and personal experience. Firstly, they can learn new skills and understand different ways of working. They may also improve their communication skills, especially if they need to use a foreign language in their workplace. Secondly, living abroad can help employees become more independent and confident because they have to adapt to a new culture and environment. For example, an employee who moves from Pakistan to the United Kingdom may learn how to work with people from different cultural backgrounds and develop a more international perspective.
Companies can also gain several advantages from this development. One important benefit is that employees who have international experience can bring new ideas and knowledge back to the company. They may understand foreign markets better and help the business communicate with international customers. In addition, sending employees abroad can improve cooperation between different branches of the same company. Employees who have worked in different offices may develop stronger professional relationships with their colleagues around the world.
Another advantage is that international work opportunities can increase employee motivation and satisfaction. Workers may feel that their company values their professional development, which can encourage them to remain with the organisation for a longer period.
In conclusion, living and working in another country can help employees gain experience, confidence and new skills. At the same time, companies can benefit from employees' international knowledge, stronger global cooperation and improved employee motivation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing how international work opportunities benefit both employees and companies. The position is clear throughout the essay, and ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as an employee moving from Pakistan to the United Kingdom. The response covers multiple points for both sides, including professional experience, independence, new ideas, global cooperation, and employee motivation. Because the length requirement is fully met and all main prompt areas are thoroughly explored, the response easily satisfies the criteria for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from an introduction to body paragraphs focusing on employees, then companies, and concluding with a summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'One important benefit', 'In addition', and 'Another advantage' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although some devices are fairly standard. Overall, the structural flow meets the standards for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully conveying complex ideas related to the workplace and international assignments. Less common lexical items are used with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'professional and personal experience', 'cultural backgrounds', 'international perspective', and 'professional development'. While the vocabulary is appropriate and communicates the ideas clearly without impeding the reader, it stops short of the wider, highly fluent range required for Band 8.0, fitting comfortably into Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response employs a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, showing strong control over grammar and punctuation. Examples such as 'especially if they need to use a foreign language in their workplace' and 'Workers may feel that their company values their professional development, which can encourage them to remain with the organisation' demonstrate an ability to handle subordinate clauses effectively. There are frequent error-free sentences, and the occasional minor slips do not impede communication. The grammatical range and accuracy strongly support a Band 7.0 score.
