IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give a feedback about the concert I attended in the local park last sunday. It was a great experience and the event was well organised by our local council.

Since it is a festive season they organised a pre-navratri celebration. It was a great event and they invited Raj Gadhvi, who is the famous garba singer in Gujrat. Almost more than 500 people attended the garba event and played garba that night. Although, we had not faced any parking difficulties which should be appericiated.

The singer was great and sang many of our favourite songs and we enjoyed playing garba with our group. The place was not felt crowded despite of the huge crowd, and we got enough space to play garba. Food was also great, they arranged gujrati food which was delicious.

But there was an one issue regarding slow processing by security staff. There were huge line at the entry gate for security cheacking, which must be improved

Kind regards,

Mansi Pansuriya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by providing feedback about a concert attended in a local park, explaining both positive aspects and an issue regarding the security staff. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter, starting with a suitable greeting and signing off correctly. However, while the main purpose of the letter is clear, some ideas remain slightly under-developed. For instance, the mention of the parking situation and the food is brief and could have been extended with more specific details to fully meet the higher band criteria. Nevertheless, the relevant information is presented, and the purpose of the communication is clearly conveyed throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from the introduction to the details of the event, the positive highlights, the single issue encountered, and the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different points, such as the organization of the event, the performance and food, and the security concern. Cohesive devices are employed, although referencing and linking can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, such as the transition used in the final paragraph. To move further up, the use of cohesive ties could be made more sophisticated and seamless, ensuring smoother transitions between the various aspects of the feedback.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to communicate basic and specific ideas about the concert experience, such as festive season, celebration, and delicious. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by word choice errors, spelling mistakes, and awkward collocations, such as "give a feedback" instead of "provide feedback" or "security cheacking" instead of "security checking". These occasional errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in word selection and collocation to achieve a higher level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with words like 'although' and 'despite'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles, incorrect pluralisation in phrases like "There were huge line", and minor prepositional or tense inconsistencies like "The place was not felt crowded". However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message easily. To reach a higher standard, the frequency of error-free sentences needs to increase, alongside better control over complex structures and punctuation.
