IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to give you a honest feedback about a concert which I have attended last weekend.
I really enjoy the concert and relish its organisation. The concert was well organised and all the safety measures have been implemented to ensure the security in the area like security personals and cameras for surveillance. Furthermore, several book workshops and food stalls have been also installed.
However, there are few drawbacks to this concert that I wasn’t particularly happy with. For instance, firsty, rubbsih bins which were placed were not sufficient. Therefore, some individuals was throwing the plastic bottles, wrappers and used napkins at the place. Secondly, I was not satisfied with the seating arrangements.
I suggest the council to work on these aspects to improve the concert next summer. I also recommend to install the seperated section for the disabled and elderly citizens as I OBSERVED THAT THEY ARE SUFFERING FROM PROBLEMS.
I hope you will contemplate my requests and suggestions for the next concert.
Kind regards,
Tarry

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter fulfils its main purpose: it gives feedback on the concert, identifies positive features, explains two problems, and offers suggestions for next year. The praise is supported with details such as the safety measures, surveillance cameras, workshops and food stalls. The concerns about insufficient bins and seating are also clear, and the recommendation for provision for disabled and elderly attendees adds a relevant, specific point. To strengthen the response further, develop the seating complaint with an example of what was unsatisfactory, and make the requested action for that issue more explicit. The closing is appropriate, and the overall message remains clear and consistent.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: opening purpose, positive feedback, drawbacks, recommendations and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while signposts such as “Furthermore,” “However,” “For instance” and “Secondly” guide the reader through the points. The progression is easy to follow and the suggestions relate to the problems raised. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the numbered sequence “firstly” and “Secondly,” and the transition from the seating complaint to the recommendation for disabled and elderly attendees could be made more explicit. A clearer connection between each problem and its proposed solution would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the letter’s purpose and include some task-appropriate terms, such as “safety measures,” “surveillance,” “seating arrangements” and “disabled and elderly citizens.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and limit precision. For example, “relish its organisation” is unnatural for expressing approval, “security personals” is not the correct term, and “book workshops” may not convey the intended activity clearly. There are also spelling errors in “firsty,” “rubbsih” and “seperated.” Choose familiar, accurate expressions where uncertain, and proofread carefully; this will make the message sound more natural and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a concert which I have attended” and the purpose clause “to ensure the security.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “a honest feedback” needs the correct article, “some individuals was throwing” has subject–verb disagreement, and “I suggest the council to work” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The tense in “I really enjoy” also does not fit as well as a past form for a concert attended last weekend. Work on articles, agreement, tense consistency and verb patterns, while retaining the clear sentence structure already present.
