Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide feedback regarding 3 days of live music performances that was held in our community garden. I did not get a chance to attend all, but I was able to participate in one of them and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I attended the Rock and Pop music fest, it was a worthwhile experience. As I like to dance on live music especially if it is a rock song, hence, I attended this concert. Moreover, this occasion was organized by my favourite singer Taylor Swift so I had to attend it.
I enjoyed the evening becuase the band was enthusiastic and they performed with alacrity. This made the night more lively and vibrant. The sound quality and lighting added a charm to the event.
However, for the next time, I would like to request the authorities to improvise certain things. First and foremost, the waste management, the food wrappers and leftover food was spilled on the ground, making it difficult to walk. Another thing would be, increase in sitting arranagements for older adults. Overall, the concert was a great event to refresh ourselves.
Looking forward for the next summer to enjoy such events meanwhile improving certain things.
Yours faithfully,
Anushka Parmar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points: you identify the Rock and Pop concert, explain that you enjoyed the band’s energy, sound and lighting, and suggest better waste management and more seating for older adults. The positive response is clear, and the suggestions are relevant. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain the concert’s connection to Taylor Swift more clearly: “organized by my favourite singer” is surprising in this context and could be clarified. You could also make the improvement requests more specific, such as proposing additional bins or a clean-up team and accessible seating. Overall, the letter fulfils its purpose and maintains a clear position, though some points could be extended with more precise supporting detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to the concert attended, to reasons for enjoyment and suggestions. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “First and foremost,” and “Overall” make relationships between ideas clear. Some linking is less natural or slightly mechanical: “As I like to dance … hence, I attended” combines two cause-and-result markers, while “Another thing would be, increase in sitting arrangements” does not connect smoothly to the preceding suggestion. The closing sentence also introduces “meanwhile” awkwardly. Use simpler links where the relationship is already clear, and make each suggestion a complete, parallel sentence. This would preserve the logical organisation while making cohesion more flexible and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for the letter and attempt some less common expressions, including “enthusiastic,” “alacrity,” and “vibrant.” These help convey the lively atmosphere, and the meaning remains clear throughout. However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “participate in” is less suitable than “attend” for a concert, “improvise certain things” does not mean make improvements, and “sitting arrangements” is not the natural phrase for seats. “Alacrity” is also unusually formal for describing a band’s performance. There are spelling errors in “becuase” and “arranagements.” Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than choosing a more elaborate word when a simpler one fits better; this will build on the range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “performances that was held” and a reason clause beginning “because.” The message is generally easy to understand, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, the plural subject “performances” requires “were held”; “I attended the Rock and Pop music fest” would also read more smoothly with a full stop or a conjunction before the next independent clause. The construction “As I like … hence, I attended” is not grammatically well formed because it uses two result structures together. In “the food wrappers and leftover food was spilled,” the compound subject needs plural agreement, and the final sentence lacks a clear main clause. Check agreement and sentence boundaries, and revise incomplete or overloaded constructions while retaining varied sentence forms.
