Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to formally give my feedback about the Music Concert I attended a month ago on September 15, 2026 at Mill Lake Park.

There are a couple of reasons why I liked the concert, some of them are, firstly, the artist who played music was my favourite, I always listen to his music whenever I feel lonely , which gives me joy and amile on my face. Secondly, the arrangements at the event were extraordinary such as, food stalls, painting competition and the fun activities for children. I was literally amazed by such setup.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the concert and venue, and give relevant reasons for enjoying it: the performer was a favourite, and the event included food stalls, a painting competition and children’s activities. However, the response is incomplete: it ends at “I would app” and gives no usable suggestions for improving next summer’s concerts, so one required part is not addressed. The enjoyment points are also only briefly explained, with little detail about how the activities affected your experience. The response is 49 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the limited coverage. To improve, complete the letter, add specific and practical suggestions, and develop each point with a short explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic progression from stating its purpose to explaining why you enjoyed the concert. “Firstly” and “Secondly” help signal the two reasons, and the examples of stalls and activities are relevant. However, the letter stops abruptly at “I would app,” so there is no closing or transition to the requested suggestions. The first reasons sentence is also crowded: “There are a couple of reasons … some of them are” repeats the same framing and makes the organisation less smooth. Use separate paragraphs for the concert details, your suggestions and a brief closing, and connect each idea clearly without unnecessary introductory wording.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this letter, including relevant expressions such as “formally give my feedback,” “food stalls,” “painting competition” and “extraordinary.” These choices make the main points understandable, and “arrangements” shows an attempt to use more formal vocabulary. Some phrasing is less natural or precise, however: “the artist who played music” could be expressed more directly, and “such setup” is an awkward collocation. There is also a spelling error in “amile,” which should be “a smile.” Aim for natural, precise combinations and use vocabulary that fits a formal letter, while retaining the clear event-related terms you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence explaining how the performer’s music affects you. The main meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce control. In “There are a couple of reasons … some of them are, firstly,” the sentence structure is awkward and punctuation does not clearly separate the ideas. The clause “which gives me joy and amile on my face” is also not well formed; a clearer structure would be “which brings me joy and puts a smile on my face.” There are inconsistent spaces before commas and full stops, and the response ends with an incomplete sentence. Use shorter, complete sentences and check clause structure and punctuation before finishing.
