Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to give feedback on the concerts that was recently organised by the council this Summer in August.
I attended the dance concert which held on Saturday evening, 14th of August at the church hall. I arrived early and was able to secure a seat at the front row and this gave me access to a very clear view of the stage. The stage was had a beautiful set up designed by the local event planners.
I really enjoyed the concert as the dancers were very talented and put up such an amazing performance. Their costumes were beautifully adorned with crowns which signified a memorable event when the town gained independence from the neighbouring village who had colonised us for years. Local food and drinks were served and everyone ate to their satisfaction.
I would like that more people are not allowed into the hall when it's full as the hall was overcrowded and some people took advantage of this and stole from others who were carried away by the activity happening on the stage. A Canopy can be set up outside where people can seat down and a projector is setup for them to watch.
Also, an officer can be assigned to walk around to enforce decorum and reduce the way people walk around when the show is going on.
Yours faithfully,
Nwamaka Ndego

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you identify the dance concert, explain your enjoyment through the dancers, costumes and refreshments, and suggest crowd-control measures for next summer. The account of the performance is relevant and gives the reader a sense of the event. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. The reason for enjoying the concert is supported with several details, while the suggestions could be clearer and more directly framed as improvements—for example, explain how the outdoor canopy and projector would work for people unable to enter. The reference to theft is also serious but would benefit from a concise explanation of how better capacity management could prevent it. This covers the task well overall, though not every point is equally developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening purpose, a description of the concert, an account of what you enjoyed, and a final paragraph of suggestions. This progression helps the reader follow your feedback, and paragraphing separates the main topics. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “I arrived early” joins the seating detail and the view with “and,” while the next sentence shifts abruptly to the stage design. In the final paragraph, several recommendations are packed together, making the relationship between overcrowding, theft, the canopy and an officer less clear. Use linking phrases to show cause and effect, and separate the practical suggestions into distinct sentences. The organisation is coherent, but cohesion is not yet consistently flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “performance,” “costumes,” “overcrowded,” “enforce decorum” and “projector.” These choices communicate the event and your concerns, and some less common expressions add specificity. There are also several awkward or inaccurate collocations that reduce naturalness: “put up such an amazing performance” would be more idiomatic as “gave an amazing performance,” and “seat down” should be “sit down.” “The stage was had a beautiful set up” also contains an unsuitable form and phrasing; “the stage had a beautiful setup” is clearer. Check spelling and word forms such as “setup” and “canopy,” and choose precise expressions for the audience arrangements. Overall, meaning remains clear despite these slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the neighbouring village who had colonised us” and the conditional idea in your crowd-management suggestions. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable and occasionally make a sentence difficult to process. For example, “the concerts that was” has subject–verb disagreement, “the dance concert which held” is missing a passive verb, and “The stage was had” combines incompatible verb forms. There are also errors in “I would like that more people are not allowed” and “where people can seat down.” Practise forming relative clauses and passive constructions, and check agreement and verb patterns when editing. More accurate control of these structures would make your varied sentences clearer.
