IELTS Writing Task 1 question

This summer your local council organised a series of free concerts in your local park. You attended one of the concerts. The council has asked for feedback about the concerts.

Write a letter to the council giving your feedback. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Zubair, and I am a resident of Sahar Villas' . I am writing to give my review regarding a folk concert which I attended on 5th of August in south park.

I have to say this that you people organized the event very well. I am very fond of music and enjoyed that show very much, particularly the performance of Mr Jack at the end of concert. In addition, the seating arrangments were perfect, and every body was able to see the whole stage regardless of their sitting position. Also, the sound system was up to the mark, and no body complained about high pitch or irritating sound.

If you do not mind. I want to make some suggestion regarding its further improvement. Firstly, I feel that space was not sufficient for the audience. In order to improve this you may choose North park which is just adjacent to the City Hall. Secondly, you may install extra lights to improve the visibility at the concert site.

I hope you will consider my suggestions, and best of luck for future.

Kind regards,

Zubair.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you identify the folk concert and its date, explain that you enjoyed Mr Jack’s performance and the seating and sound, and offer two practical suggestions for next summer. Your positive evaluation is clear, and the suggestions to use North Park and add lighting are relevant. The reasons for enjoying the concert are supported with specific details, especially that everyone could see the stage and the sound was not irritating. To make the response more fully developed, explain the space problem more precisely—for example, whether the audience felt crowded or some people could not find a place to sit. Also, the opening says “Dear Sir,” rather than using the requested “Dear Sir or Madam,” which would better suit an unknown recipient.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the purpose, describe what worked well, then present improvements and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “In addition,” “Also,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” make the sequence easy to follow. The ideas are generally connected logically, including the link between limited space and choosing a larger park. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and the repeated additive transitions make the praise read like a list. You could vary the connections by explaining how one feature contributed to your enjoyment, then move naturally to the next. The phrase “If you do not mind. I want…” also interrupts the flow; joining it into one sentence would make the transition smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal feedback letter, including relevant expressions such as “seating arrangements,” “sound system,” “visibility,” and “further improvement.” These choices communicate your points clearly, and the reader can understand the overall evaluation without difficulty. Some wording is less natural or precise: “give my review regarding” is awkward in this context, “up to the mark” is conversational, and “high pitch or irritating sound” does not express the sound-quality point idiomatically. There are also spelling and spacing slips, including “arrangments,” “every body,” and “no body.” Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make the letter sound more polished while retaining its clear, relevant vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as the sentence explaining that everyone could see the stage “regardless of their sitting position.” Most meaning remains clear, and you use past-tense forms appropriately when describing the concert. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “I have to say this that” has an unnecessary construction, and “If you do not mind. I want…” incorrectly separates a dependent introductory phrase from the main sentence. Articles and prepositions also need attention in “on 5th of August,” “in south park,” and “at the end of concert.” Review sentence boundaries and article use, and practise combining clauses accurately; this will improve control without sacrificing the range you already attempt.
