Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to give feedback regarding the series of free concerts organised by local council in central park this summer.

Last saturday evening, I attended the classical music concert held by the city orchestra. I was so excited to attend this event because classical music is my favourite genre.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the event. The musicians performed exceptionally well, and the open air environment made the atmosphere more enjoyable and relaxed. Furthermore, the sound quality was quite good, and it was clear that a lot of efforts went into settings up the main stage.

However, I would like to make a couple of suggestions to improve the events for next summer. Firstly, there are not enough seating arrangements for older citizens, so many people had to stand for hours. Adding extra chairs would be very halpful. Secondly, it would be great if you could provide more food stalls and portable toilets to avoid long queues.

Thank you for organizing such a wonderful community events and I look forward to attending next year.

Yours faithfully,

Maninder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you identify the city orchestra’s classical music concert, explain your enjoyment through the musicians’ performance, relaxed open-air atmosphere and sound quality, and offer practical suggestions for next summer. The letter also maintains a polite, appropriate purpose and tone. Your reasons are relevant, though some could be developed further—for example, you could explain how the concert’s atmosphere or programme made the experience especially memorable. The suggestions about seating, food stalls and portable toilets are useful, but briefly explaining who would benefit or how queues affected attendees would make them more fully supported. Overall, the task is covered effectively, with room to extend a few ideas rather than simply list them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear progression from its purpose, to the concert attended, to your positive feedback and then suggestions. Paragraphing supports this structure, and signposts such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” “However,” and “Firstly” help readers follow the shift between points. The closing is also appropriate. To make the flow more polished, vary the way you connect suggestions and avoid relying mainly on explicit sequencing words. For instance, the two improvement points could be linked by explaining how better facilities would make the event more comfortable for visitors. The final sentence could also be separated into a distinct closing paragraph. These refinements would make cohesion feel more natural and less dependent on signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal feedback letter, including “thoroughly enjoyed,” “exceptionally well,” “open air environment,” and “portable toilets.” These choices communicate your experience and recommendations clearly, and there is some awareness of appropriate tone. A few word choices and collocations are less natural or precise: “a lot of efforts” is better expressed as “a lot of effort,” while “settings up the main stage” should be “setting up the main stage.” There are also spelling slips in “halpful” and “saturday,” and “community events” does not agree naturally with the singular event described. Greater accuracy with collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen an otherwise effective vocabulary range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the reason clause “because classical music is my favourite genre” and the conditional suggestion “it would be great if you could provide…”. Many sentences are clear and well controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical errors remain. In “organised by local council,” a determiner is needed before “local council”; “there are not enough seating arrangements” has a number agreement problem; and “Thank you for organizing such a wonderful community events” needs a singular noun or a plural determiner. The phrase “I look forward to attending next year” is also clearer as “attending the concerts next year.” Reviewing articles, agreement and noun number would help you retain your varied sentence structures with greater accuracy.
