Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to your request for the feedback on the free concerts held in Riverside Park this summer.

I attended the Jazz evening on Saturday, 12 July, with my family. It was the first time we had been to an outdoor concert in our town, and we were delighted to see so many local residents there.

There were several reasons why I enjoyed the event. Firstly, the musicians were extremely talented and their lively performance created a wonderful atmosphere. Secondly, the park itself was an ideal venue , as we could relax on the grass while the children played safely nearby. Most importantly, because the concert was free, people from all backgrounds could attend , which gave the evening a real sense of community.

However, I would like to suggest a few improvements for next summer. The seating areas were very crowded, so providing more benches or allowing people to reserve spaces would be helpful. In addition, there were only two food stalls, which led to long queues. Finally, offering a wider variety of music, such as classical or folk, would attract an even larger audience.

Thanks for organising such a grateful events in our town.

Yours faithfully,

Simran Puggal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requirements clearly. You identify the event precisely as the “Jazz evening on Saturday, 12 July,” explain your enjoyment through the musicians, the family-friendly park setting and the inclusive atmosphere, and offer relevant suggestions about seating, food stalls and musical variety. These points are supported with specific details, such as the long queues and children playing nearby, so the response is well developed and purposeful. The tone is appropriately courteous for writing to the council, and the closing thanks them for organising the events. To make the feedback even more complete, you could briefly explain how the council might manage reserved spaces or expand food provision, but this is a minor opportunity rather than a gap in task coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The organisation is clear and effective: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph identifies the concert, and separate paragraphs explain your enjoyment and suggest improvements. The progression within the enjoyment paragraph is easy to follow, with “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Most importantly,” while “However” signals the shift to recommendations. This gives the letter a logical flow and makes its main points easy to locate. Some linking is slightly formulaic because several points rely on explicit sequencing words, and the final sentence of thanks feels abrupt after the suggestions. A more connected closing, briefly summarising your hope that the changes will improve future events, would make the ending feel more integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal feedback letter, including “lively performance,” “ideal venue,” “sense of community,” and “wider variety,” which communicate your ideas clearly and with some precision. The language is generally appropriate to the topic and audience. A few choices are less natural or accurate: “a grateful events” does not express the intended appreciation, and “Jazz evening” would read more naturally as “jazz evening” or “jazz concert.” There are also minor spacing inconsistencies around punctuation, though these do not affect meaning. To strengthen lexical control, focus on natural collocations and accurate word forms, especially in the closing sentence, while retaining the clear and varied vocabulary used elsewhere.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful variety of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “because the concert was free, people from all backgrounds could attend” and the relative clause “which gave the evening a real sense of community.” Most sentences are controlled and easy to understand, and the past-tense account of the event is consistent. A few grammatical and punctuation details remain: in “the feedback,” the article is unnecessary in this context, and the spaces before commas in “venue ,” and “attend ,” should be removed. The closing phrase “such a grateful events” also has a number and form problem; the intended construction could be “such a successful event” or “such enjoyable events.” Continued attention to articles, agreement and punctuation would improve accuracy.
