Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I was there for the Bruno Mars concert as one of the series of free concerts at Holland Park, Surrey this summer. I was there with my family and we all had a fun day out in the park and enjoyed Bruno Mars's show.
The concert was entertaining in part of course due to a world renowed enteratiner singing and playing his biggest hits on stage. However, the facilities you guys provided were also exceptional. There was shaded areas, benches, open spaces to picnic at, and seats nearby the stage providing experiences to people who have different preferences. With that you guys had drinks and snacks for purchase with the summer theme keeping us cool and refreshed throughout the day. I also appreciated the fans running at differnt places to provide much needed cooling during the heat.
However, I do have a few suggestions for next years concerts. Kids, I felt were not always engaged in the concert and need other activities to stay engaged, which were lacking. If there were some fair-like minigame booths, dedicated area for children to play it would be even better. Also, the washroom stalls were few and far between, thus always having a queue, so having more of them accessible would also be a good addition.
I hope you keep my feedback in mind for the next year's shows.
Yours Faithfully,
Aryan Kaushal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three points clearly: you identify the Bruno Mars concert at Holland Park, explain your enjoyment through the performance and facilities, and offer practical suggestions for next summer. The positive feedback is supported with specific details, including shaded areas, picnic spaces, refreshments and fans. Your proposals for children’s activities and more washroom stalls are relevant and understandable. To make the response more fully developed, explain briefly how the suggested activities would improve the experience for families, or clarify how the washroom shortage affected visitors. The tone is generally appropriate for a council, although “you guys” is rather informal in this context. Overall, the purpose is clear and the ideas are extended, with some scope to develop the suggestions further and maintain a consistently formal register.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the concert, describes what worked well, then turns to improvements before closing. Paragraphing supports this structure, and transitions such as “However” and “Also” help signal the shift from praise to suggestions. The details within the positive-feedback paragraph are grouped logically around the performance and facilities. At times, though, links between ideas are a little loose: “With that” does not clearly show how refreshments relate to the facilities, and “However” is used to introduce suggestions after an already positive paragraph without a particularly strong contrast. Use more precise linking phrases and ensure each sentence connects explicitly to the point before it. This would make the progression feel smoother and less dependent on basic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including relevant terms such as “shaded areas,” “picnic,” “engaged,” “accessible” and “refreshed.” Some choices show an attempt to be specific, particularly when describing the facilities and children’s needs. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or informal expressions reduce accuracy: “renowed” and “enteratiner” are misspelled, while “you guys” is too conversational for a formal letter. Phrases such as “experiences to people who have different preferences” are also awkward and could be expressed more naturally. Aim for accurate collocations and a consistent formal register, and proofread carefully for spelling. These improvements would make your vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “The concert was entertaining … However, the facilities…” and the conditional suggestion “If there were some … it would be even better.” Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In “There was shaded areas,” the plural subject requires “There were”; “next years concerts” needs a possessive apostrophe (“next year’s concerts”); and “Kids … need other activities” shifts from past-tense feedback to present tense without a clear reason. The sentence beginning “If there were some fair-like minigame booths” also needs a clearer parallel structure for the proposed booths and play area. Greater control of agreement, tense consistency and sentence construction would strengthen accuracy while preserving your range.
