IELTS Writing Task 1 question
This summer your local council organised a series of free concerts in your local park. You attended one of the concerts. The council has asked for feedback about the concerts.
Write a letter to the council giving your feedback. In your letter
say which concert you attended
explain why you enjoyed the concert
make suggestions for improving next summer's concerts
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide my honest feedback from my latest experience, a successful concert held by you. I was impressed by your overall management during this event.
In particular, I attended a Pop-up show by Martin Ben, a well-known artist of the United States. He amazed everyone by his talent especially, by his unique style of playing guitar.
The first and foremost reason why I enjoyed the event so much is, I have been looking forward to this concert for ages. I was screaming throughout the event, feeling overwhelmed by Ben's performance.
Notwithstanding seating arrangements, everything else was perfectly fine. I would appreciate it if you could enlarge the auditorium space by adding extra chairs and couches for attendees.
Thank you for your consideration. I will look forward to attending more concerts organised by you in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Rutvi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you identify Martin Ben’s pop-up show, explain that you had anticipated it and enjoyed his guitar performance, and suggest adding seating. The positive response is clear, and the letter has an appropriate opening and closing. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the reason that you had “been looking forward to this concert for ages” could be supported with a specific detail, and the seating suggestion would be more useful if you explained what was inadequate or proposed a practical arrangement. The response is also three words below the required minimum, so add a little relevant detail to meet the task requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is arranged in a clear sequence: purpose, concert details, reasons for enjoyment, suggestions, and closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these functions, and phrases such as “In particular” and “Thank you for your consideration” guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent overall structure. Some linking is less natural or precise, however. “The first and foremost reason” is followed by a sentence that combines anticipation and excitement without clearly developing their relationship, while “Notwithstanding seating arrangements” makes the transition to criticism awkward. Use simpler, more direct links—for example, “One reason I enjoyed it was…” and “My main suggestion concerns the seating”—to make progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal feedback letter, including “overall management,” “overwhelmed,” and “consideration.” These choices communicate enthusiasm and maintain an appropriately polite tone. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but some are not quite natural in context: “a successful concert held by you” and “enlarge the auditorium space” do not describe an outdoor park concert precisely, and “screaming throughout the event” may suggest disruptive behaviour rather than enjoyment. Choose more idiomatic, specific wording, such as describing the council as having “organised” the concert and asking for “more seating in the concert area.” This would improve precision while retaining your positive tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “I would appreciate it if you could…” and the relative clause “a well-known artist of the United States.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following your message. Some punctuation and sentence construction need attention: in “The first and foremost reason why I enjoyed the event so much is, I have been looking forward…,” the comma incorrectly separates the clause, and the construction after “reason” is awkward. The phrase “He amazed everyone by his talent especially, by his unique style” also has misplaced punctuation. Try: “I enjoyed the event because I had been looking forward to it for ages, and I was particularly impressed by his distinctive guitar playing.”
