IELTS Writing Task 1 question

This summer your local council organised a series of free concerts in your local park. You attended one of the concerts. The council has asked for feedback about the concerts.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my satisfaction regarding the concert that I attended last week.

I would like to discuss the live music concert that I attended in the local park. Moreover, I liked that event for several reasons. Firstly, it had a lively atmosphere where could people enjoyed with their friends and family members. In addition, famous singers encouraged many young and old people to get on the stage, which was expressive and exciting for the community.

Furthermore, I would like to give some suggestions to improve concerts for next summer. The council should provide more seating arrangements for people, especially for older citizens and children and providing snacks and water facilities would make a more comfortable environment. Lastly, it would also be grateful to provide sufficient rubbish bins to avoid unnecessary litter.

I hope you will consider my suggestion and take appropriate action.

Yours failthfully,

Vishva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover all three requested points: you identify the event as a live music concert, explain that you enjoyed its atmosphere and audience participation, and suggest seating, refreshments, and rubbish bins. These ideas are relevant and the council can understand your overall positive response. However, some points are not fully developed: “last week” does not specify which concert or performers, and the reasons for enjoying it remain quite general. The suggestion about snacks and water is also compressed into the seating sentence, so its benefit is not clearly explained. Add a specific detail about the concert and briefly explain how each improvement would help visitors to make the feedback more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your purpose, describe what you enjoyed, offer improvements, and close politely. Paragraphing separates the positive feedback from the suggestions, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” help readers follow the points. This logical organisation is a strength. At times, however, the connectors make the writing feel somewhat formulaic, and the long sentence beginning “The council should provide more seating arrangements” joins several suggestions without a clear break. Separate the seating, refreshments, and rubbish-bin recommendations into clearer sentences, and use a wider variety of natural transitions or direct links between each suggestion and its reason.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose, and phrases such as “lively atmosphere,” “community,” and “sufficient rubbish bins” communicate relevant ideas. You also attempt more formal expressions, including “express my satisfaction” and “appropriate action.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, though: “expressive and exciting” does not clearly describe the singers’ invitation to join them on stage, while “it would also be grateful” uses the wrong expression. There is also a spelling error in “failthfully.” Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than formal-sounding phrases, and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the audience’s participation as “engaging” and say that you “would be grateful if the council could” take a particular action.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the concert that I attended” and a purpose clause in “to avoid unnecessary litter.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “where could people enjoyed,” the word order and verb form are incorrect; write “where people could enjoy themselves.” The sentence about singers also needs a clearer structure, such as “The singers encouraged people of all ages to join them on stage.” In the suggestions, “providing snacks and water facilities would make” does not fit smoothly with the preceding clause. Use separate sentences and check verb forms, clause structure, and punctuation to improve accuracy.
