Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give my feedback on the free concert you organized in our local park as the local council this summer.

On the 31st of August, I attended the Igbo festival. This festival was about the customs and traditions of the community. It was really an exciting experience,I really enjoyed the native perfomances and forksongs displayed at the park.

There also shared lots of locally cooked foods and when i tasted them it was surprisely delicious.

However,I would suggest that you improve in the environmental aspect of the community by organizing a good waste disposal system to ensure a clean surroungs.I noticed there was rubbish littered all over the park.I saw some pots and degraded food products and ingredients majorly at the corners. In addition, i particulary recommend you invite other neigbouring communities in the next summer to create more friendship and cooperation among one another.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours Sincererly,

Bekes Jenny

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you identify the Igbo festival, explain that you enjoyed the performances and food, and suggest better waste disposal and inviting neighbouring communities. These details make the letter relevant and give the council a clear sense of your experience. Your suggestions are supported by observations such as rubbish being left around the park, which helps extend your feedback. To make the response more fully developed, explain more specifically what made the performances enjoyable or how the council could provide waste bins and collection. The recommendation to invite other communities is relevant, but its practical benefit could also be explained further. Overall, the purpose and your position remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression from its purpose, to your experience, and then to suggestions, with a suitable closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish the positive feedback from the improvements, and connectors such as “However” and “In addition” guide the reader through your points. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. Some links between ideas are less smooth: the food sentence beginning “There also shared” does not clearly connect its subject to the previous sentence, and several sentences run together without spaces after full stops. The waste-disposal suggestion and the examples of rubbish could also be grouped and linked more deliberately. Clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including topic-related expressions such as “customs and traditions,” “native performances,” “waste disposal system,” and “friendship and cooperation.” These choices help communicate both your enjoyment and your recommendations. You also attempt less common or formal wording, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “forksongs,” “surprisely delicious,” and “degraded food products.” Spelling errors such as “perfomances,” “surroungs,” and “neigbouring” also reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, “folk songs,” “surprisingly delicious,” and “spoiled food” would express your ideas more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the sentence explaining the purpose of the waste-disposal system and the recommendation about inviting neighbouring communities. The main ideas are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “There also shared lots of locally cooked foods” lacks a clear subject and needs a structure such as “There was also a wide range of locally cooked food.” In “when i tasted them it was,” the clauses need clearer punctuation and the pronoun reference is unclear. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent, and several sentences are joined directly together. Work on complete sentence structures, clause punctuation, and consistent capitalisation to improve control.
