Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, a considerable number of large international companies provide their staff with opportunities to live and work abroad for a short period. This development can be highly beneficial for employees, as it enables them to gain international experience and develop greater cultural awareness, while companies can benefit from a more adaptable and internationally experienced workforce.

On the one hand, working abroad can offer several advantages to employees. One significant benefit of this trend is that employees can gain international experience. Since employees work for international companies in foreign countries, they are exposed to different working environment and professional practices. This can enable them to gain foreign experience and results in a significant rise in chances of securing well-paid employment in the future. Furthermore, it can also help employees develop cultural awareness. By working abroad, workers have a chance to work with people from different cultural, religious and social backgrounds, which can allow them to gain a deeper understanding of cultural awareness by communicating with colleagues.

On the other hand, companies can also benefit from a more adaptable and internationally experienced workforce. When large organizations send their employees abroad, they can gain first-hand knowledge of foreign markets and develop stronger relationships with international clients. This can result in the company's rapid growth. Another compelling benefit for companies is that they are able to expand their businesses globally. Employees can gain valuable insights into international business practices, which can be beneficial for companies to promote their products abroad. As a result, trades are more likely to expand through sending their employees in foreign countries.

In conclusion, the trend of sending employees abroad can be valuable for workers to gain experience and develop cultural awareness, whereas large international companies can benefit from experienced and adaptable workers who can help them in their overall development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying benefits for both employees and companies. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. The position is consistent throughout the essay. However, some points could be developed further to reach a higher band. For instance, the explanation of how working abroad leads to 'well-paid employment' is somewhat generic. Similarly, the section on companies could benefit from a more concrete example of how 'first-hand knowledge of foreign markets' specifically translates into growth. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers the requirements of the task effectively, providing a balanced view of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main perspectives. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. The overall structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language such as 'adaptable', 'internationally experienced', and 'compelling benefit'. However, there is some repetition of phrases like 'gain experience' and 'work abroad', which limits the range. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'trades are more likely to expand', where 'business operations' or 'market reach' would be more precise. The range is adequate, but more variety in synonyms and more precise academic collocations would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'different working environment' (should be plural 'environments') and 'sending their employees in foreign countries' (should be 'to'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the control over complex structures is consistent. While the range of structures is good, it does not consistently demonstrate the high level of flexibility and error-free complexity required for the highest bands.
