IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays many large international companies offer their staff the opportunity to spend a period of time living and working in another country.
Why might this opportunity be good for employees?
What advantages does this development have for companies?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Many multinational companies give their employees the chance to live and work overseas for a certain period. This opportunity can benefit employees by developing their professional and personal skills, while companies can also gain valuable knowledge from their internationally experienced staff.
For employees, working in another country can be an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development. Living in an unfamiliar environment requires workers to adapt to different cultures, communication styles and methods of working. As a result, they are likely to become more independent, flexible and confident, while also improving their ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds. For example, an Indian employee who spends two years working in Germany may learn how to cooperate effectively with German colleagues and become more comfortable dealing with international clients. These skills can improve the employee’s future career prospects.
Companies can also benefit significantly because employees who have worked overseas can bring valuable knowledge back to the organisation. They can develop a better understanding of foreign markets, customer preferences and business practices. This can help companies make better decisions when entering new markets and communicating with international clients. For instance, if a technology company sends an employee to Canada, that worker may gain a clearer understanding of local customers and competitors and later use this knowledge when the company expands there. Employees with international experience may also be better prepared to manage overseas projects.
In conclusion, overseas work placements can benefit both employees and companies. Workers can develop confidence, adaptability and international experience, while businesses can gain valuable knowledge that helps them expand successfully in foreign markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits for employees and the advantages for companies. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the Indian employee working in Germany and the technology company expanding into Canada. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic. The arguments are logical and demonstrate a good understanding of the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices, such as 'As a result', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the essay easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. You demonstrate a good range of topic-specific language, such as 'multinational companies', 'professional development', 'foreign markets', and 'overseas work placements'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it lacks some of the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would push the score into the highest band. However, the word choice is precise and natural throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. You use complex structures effectively, such as conditional sentences ('if a technology company sends an employee to Canada, that worker may gain...') and participial phrases. There are no significant errors that impede communication, and the punctuation is handled correctly.
