What advantages does this development have for companies?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, many large international companies give their employees the opportunity to live and work in another country for a certain period. This development can be highly beneficial for both employees and companies.

For employees, working abroad can provide valuable personal and professional experience. Firstly, it allows them to develop new skills and gain a better understanding of different working cultures. This can improve their communication, adaptability and confidence. Secondly, living in another country gives employees the opportunity to experience a different lifestyle, learn a new language and meet people from different backgrounds. These experiences can make them more independent and broaden their perspective. For example, an employee from India who works in Germany may learn new professional practices while also improving their German language skills.

Companies can also gain several advantages from sending their staff overseas. One important benefit is that employees can develop international experience, which can help the company expand into foreign markets. Employees who understand local customers and business practices can communicate more effectively with overseas clients and partners. In addition, international assignments can increase employee motivation and loyalty because staff members may feel that the company is investing in their career development. This can also help companies retain talented workers.

In conclusion, working in another country can help employees become more skilled, confident and culturally aware. At the same time, companies can benefit from employees with international experience, stronger global relationships and greater employee loyalty. Therefore, this opportunity can be valuable for both sides.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task fully, discussing both why the opportunity is good for employees and what advantages it brings to companies. The student maintains a clear position throughout the text and provides relevant supporting ideas and examples, such as the example of an employee from India working in Germany. Ideas are well-developed and clear. However, the official length check indicates that the student's response contains 248 words, which falls slightly short of the mandatory 250-word minimum requirement. This minor negative feature prevents the task response from achieving a higher band. Therefore, while the content is well-handled, a deduction is applied for under-length, resulting in a band score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction, benefits for employees, advantages for companies, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, as seen with transition phrases like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the distinct ideas logically. Referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring that the reader can follow the writer's arguments easily without confusion. Overall, the structural organization aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'beneficial', 'adaptability', 'international assignments', and 'career development'. Word choice is generally appropriate, and spelling is accurate throughout the text. While the vocabulary is effective for communicating the main points clearly, it occasionally leans towards standard or predictable collocations rather than showcasing a truly wide or sophisticated lexical resource. Because the language is clear and contains very few lexical errors that do not impede communication, this performance sits comfortably in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, warranting a solid 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms with generally solid control of grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include 'Employees who understand local customers and business practices can communicate more effectively...' and 'This can also help companies retain talented workers.' There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is managed well throughout the response. Grammatical errors are practically non-existent, reflecting a strong command of sentence architecture. Although the range of structures could be slightly more adventurous to reach the highest bands, the accuracy and variety displayed easily satisfy the criteria for Band 7.0.
