Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, many multi-national companies give their employees with a chance to live and work in another country for some time. While it offers valuable overseas exposure to employees, it also promotes the overall productivity of the companies.

For employees, these opportunities offer significant exposure that contributes to their growth and development both at a professional and personal level. It enriches their knowledge about different working methods and cultural expectations, which enhances their adaptability and cultural awareness. This international experience makes them more competitive when applying for higher career positions. For example, an Indian Microsoft employee, during his placement in the US branch, gains transferable competencies that broaden his horizons. Thus, living and working overseas is an excellent opportunity for employees that provide them with valuable global professional acumen.

Similarly, the companies can also benefit significantly from this development. When employees return from international placements and apply the acquired knowledge and experience to their original workplace, it boosts their work performance. They may have leaned about new markets, customer preferences and more efficient ways of doing business, which contributes to the business productivity. Moreover, international assignments can strengthen cooperation between different branches of the same company. For instance, a GM company manager who has worked in both the Canadian and European branches may be able to help these offices work more efficiently. Furthermore, it also inspires other employees to work harder and qualify for similar international opportunities.

In conclusion, living and working overseas is highly beneficial for employees since it assists in their personality and career development. Similarly, the companies get significant benefits from this trend in terms of improved performances and greater work productivity. Therefore, I believe this trend is not only beneficial for the employees but also for the companies that encourage this practice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both why international placements are beneficial for employees and what advantages they offer to companies. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the Indian Microsoft employee and the GM company manager. The arguments flow logically from personal development and career enhancement to productivity and business efficiency. This demonstrates a solid understanding of the prompt, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.5 or 8.0, and the response is very well-structured in terms of content.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction, moving to employee benefits, company benefits, and a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'For employees', 'Similarly', and 'Moreover', which help to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. While referencing is generally clear, occasional mechanical transitions prevent it from reaching the highest band. Overall, the coherence and cohesion reflect a solid Band 7 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, suitable for a Band 7. Words and phrases like 'multi-national companies', 'overseas exposure', 'cultural awareness', and 'transferable competencies' show an ability to use less common items with an awareness of collocation and style. There are minor slips in word choice, such as writing 'give their employees with a chance' instead of 'provide their employees with a chance' or 'leaned' instead of 'learned', but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally precise and adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, including relative clauses and conditional ideas, alongside simple forms. Frequent error-free sentences are present, showing a good overall control of grammar and punctuation. There are a few minor errors, such as the collocation slip 'give their employees with a chance' in the opening sentence, and minor subject-verb agreement or preposition issues ('the companies can also benefit' vs 'companies get significant benefits'). However, these errors persist only occasionally and do not impede communication, matching the descriptors for Band 7.
