Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, many big global companies give their employees a chance to live and work in another country for some time. While it offers valuable overseas exposure to employees to advance their professional skills and explore new cultures, it also promotes the overall productivity of the companies.

The primary reason is that such opportunities offer significant exposure to employees, which contributes to their personal growth and professional development. It enriches their knowledge about different working methods and cultural expectations, and enhances their adaptability and cultural awareness. This international experience makes them more competitive when applying for higher career positions. For example, an Indian Microsoft employee, during his placement in the US branch, gains transferable competencies that broaden his horizons. Thus, living and working overseas is an excellent opportunity for employees as it provides them with valuable global professional acumen.

Similarly, the companies can also benefit significantly from this development. When employees return from international placements and apply the acquired knowledge and experience to their original workplace, it boosts their work performance. They may have learned about new markets, customer preferences and more efficient ways of doing business, which contributes to the work productivity. Moreover, international assignments can strengthen cooperation between different branches of the same company. For instance, a GM company manager who has worked in both the Canadian and European branches may be able to help these offices work more efficiently. Furthermore, it also inspires other employees to work harder and qualify for similar international opportunities.

In conclusion, while living and working overseas is highly beneficial opportunity for employees as it fosters professional advancement and promotes cultural exchanges, the companies also significantly benefit by improved employee performances and greater work productivity. Therefore, I believe this trend is mutually beneficial for the employees and the companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by exploring both why the opportunity is good for employees and what advantages it presents for companies. The student maintains a clear position throughout the essay. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the Indian Microsoft employee and the GM company manager. The arguments flow logically from personal development and career progression to company productivity and inter-office cooperation. There is no tangential wandering, and all prompts in the task are given adequate attention. This aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor, which requires all parts of the task to be addressed with clear positions and extended, supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, employee benefits, company advantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'The primary reason is', 'Similarly', and 'Furthermore'. However, there are minor mechanical or repetitive elements in referencing and transitions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the main ideas. The progression of thought is easy to follow, making this performance a solid fit for the Band 7 descriptor, which highlights clear logical organization and the flexible use of cohesive devices despite some potential over- or under-use.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'global professional acumen', 'transferable competencies', and 'interchangeable expectations' reflect an attempt to use less common lexical items. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'by improved employee performances' instead of 'through improved employee performance'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings without impeding communication. This sits comfortably within the Band 7 criteria, which notes a sufficient range with some awareness of style and collocation, alongside occasional spelling or word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer showcases a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms. Sentences like 'When employees return from international placements and apply the acquired knowledge and experience to their original workplace, it boosts their work performance' demonstrate control over subordination and conditional clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, though a few minor errors persist, such as article usage ('the companies also significantly benefit by improved employee performances'). Grammar and punctuation are generally well-controlled, and meaning is never obscured. This performance meets the Band 7 descriptors, featuring a variety of complex structures and frequent error-free sentences with good overall control.
