IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays many large international companies offer their staff the opportunity to spend a period of time living and working in another country.
Why might this opportunity be good for employees?
What advantages does this development have for companies?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
These days many major global companies offer temporary international relocation opportunities to their employees. While employees gain professional expertise from working abroad, companies can benefit from increased productivity and stronger collaboration among their international offices.
For employees, an overseas assignment provide valuable opportunities for their personal and professional development. Working in another country exposes an individual to unfamiliar working style, communication practices and workplace expectations. As a result, they become more adaptable, culturally sensitive and capable of operating effectively in diverse teams. Such experiences assist in career progressions, since senior roles often require a global perspective. For example, an Indian Microsoft employee relocated to a US office may develop a deeper understanding of multinational teamwork and acquire skills that can be applied throughout his career. Thus, international relocation can substantially broaden an employee's professional outlook.
Similarly, the companies can also benefit significantly from this development. Employees returning to their home offices introduce efficient work practices, insights into foreign markets, and a better understanding of customer preferences. This transfer of knowledge may improve productivity and encourage innovation within the organization. Moreover, international assignments can strengthen relationships between different branches of the same company. For instance, a manager who has worked in both the Canadian and European branches may be able to coordinate projects more efficiently between teams in those regions. Furthermore, these opportunities also motivate other employees to improve their performance in hope of securing similar assignments.
In conclusion, living and working overseas is mutually beneficial for both the employees and the companies. It equips employees with valuable global skills and intercultural competence, while enabling companies to improve performance, share knowledge and build stronger international collaboration.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly explaining both why the opportunity is good for employees and what advantages it brings to companies. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and a concrete example, such as the Indian Microsoft employee. The response covers all aspects of the prompt thoroughly, matching the Band 8 descriptor well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Ideas are logically sequenced, and there is a clear progression throughout the essay. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme (employee benefits followed by company advantages). Cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are managed well to guide the reader, although referencing is occasionally slightly straightforward. Overall, cohesion supports the flow of ideas effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The writer demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for the task. Less common lexical items such as 'intercultural competence', 'relocation', 'multinational teamwork', and 'foreign markets' are used accurately. There are only occasional minor lapses, such as 'working style' instead of the plural 'working styles' or 'provide' instead of 'provides' in the second paragraph, but these do not impede communication, aligning with Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response features a variety of complex structures with good control of grammar and punctuation. The majority of sentences are error-free, showcasing complex clauses such as 'While employees gain professional expertise from working abroad, companies can benefit...' and 'A manager who has worked in both... may be able to...'. There is a minor subject-verb agreement error ('an overseas assignment provide' instead of 'provides'), but such occasional non-systematic errors are consistent with a Band 7.5 or 8.0 profile; a band score of 7.5 reflects this strong control.
