Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many multinational companies appoint their staff to work overseas in various countries for a certain period of time. I believe this opportunity benefits employees because it gives them a chance to work in different environments. At the same time companies can also benefit from employees having international experience.

To begin with, the employees one advantage to work overseas is to gain professional experience; working in a different country helps them to gain new working methods, technologies, and management practices. As a result, it helps them to gain valuable experience that may reflect further in the future. Also, working in a different country allows the employee to learn and adapt to cultural values and further implement them in their lives. On top of that, it also helps employees to learn and communicate in different language which will be an extra skill to add to their resume. For instance, an employee from Canada who spends years working in Japan may learn to communicate effectively with different people and adapt to unfamiliar situations.

Also, campanies can gain several advantages from employees who have international experience. Firstly, employees who return from the international assignment gain new knowledge and strategies which may help the companies to expand their marketing and increase sales. Also, nowadays people who are bilingual get more attention; companies that send their employees to work overseas may use their ability to communicate with other companies. For instance, an employee who has been working in Japan for years, it may become a mediator to translate and convey messages to the company in Canada.

In conclusion, working abroad can provide employees with valuable professional and personal experience, while companies can benefit from their increased skills, knowledge, and understanding of international markets. Therefore, this development can be advantageous to both employees and employers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining why the opportunity is beneficial for employees and the advantages it brings to companies. The writer establishes a clear position in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as the example of an employee working in Japan. However, some arguments, particularly regarding company advantages like expanding marketing, tend to be slightly generalized and could be more fully developed with deeper explanation. For instance, the transition from individual language skills to corporate expansion is stated rather than thoroughly explored. Nevertheless, the response covers all requirements of the prompt effectively, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured across distinct paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs for each main question, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Also', 'On top of that', and 'In conclusion' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main aspects of the prompt. Referencing is generally clear, though minor cohesive slips occur, such as awkward phrasing in sentence transitions. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0, supported by clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'multinational companies', 'professional experience', 'management practices', and 'international assignment'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as spelling 'campanies' instead of 'companies' and phrasing like 'the employees one advantage to work overseas'. Additionally, collocation is occasionally imprecise, such as 'increase sales' or describing an employee as a mediator who 'may become a mediator to translate'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the lexical performance solidly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'the employees one advantage to work overseas is to gain professional experience' and 'an employee who has been working in Japan for years, it may become a mediator', where the unnecessary subject pronoun 'it' creates a grammatical fault. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors in grammar and sentence structure occur, they rarely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors reflects the Band 6 descriptor.
