Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, many multinational companies appoint their staff to work overseas in different countries for a certain period of time. I believe this opportunity benefits employees because it gives them a chance to work in different environments. At the same time, companies can also benefit from having employees with international experience.

To begin with, one major advantage for employees of working overseas is that they can gain valuable professional experience. Working in a different country exposes them to new working methods, technologies and management practices. As a result, they can develop skills and knowledge that may benefit their future careers. Furthermore, working in another country allows employees to learn about different cultural values and adapt to unfamiliar environments. It can also provide them with an opportunity to learn and communicate in another language, which is an additional skill to include on their résumé. For instance, an employee from Canada who spends several years working in Japan may learn to communicate effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds and adapt to unfamiliar situations.

Companies can also gain several advantages from employees who have international experience. Firstly, employees who return from international assignments may bring new knowledge and strategies that can help companies expand into new markets and increase sales. They may also have a better understanding of foreign customers and business practices. Secondly, bilingual employees are often highly valued by companies because they can communicate effectively with international clients and business partners. For example, an employee who has worked in Japan for several years may act as a mediator between a Canadian company and its Japanese partners by translating information and conveying messages accurately.

In conclusion, working abroad can provide employees with valuable professional and personal experience, while companies can benefit from their increased skills, knowledge and understanding of international markets. Therefore, this development can be advantageous to both employees and employers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the benefits of international assignments for employees (such as professional experience, cultural adaptability, and language skills) and the advantages for companies (such as market expansion and bilingual mediation). The position is clear throughout, and main ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the Canadian employee in Japan. The development is logical and directly answers every component of the task instructions, meeting the criteria for a strong band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the body paragraphs discussing employee and company benefits, and concluding with a clear summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'Secondly' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and effectively, contributing to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some precision and flexibility. Appropriate less-common lexical items and collocations are used, such as 'multinational companies', 'professional experience', 'management practices', and 'cultural backgrounds'. Word choice is generally natural and accurate, with no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated, it is well-suited to the register of an IELTS essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writing exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('skills and knowledge that may benefit their future careers') and conditional or temporal constructions ('an employee from Canada who spends several years working in Japan may learn...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and grammar and punctuation are controlled well throughout the text. Any minor slips do not impede communication, demonstrating a solid command of grammatical structures appropriate for a band 7.
