IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays many large international companies offer their staff the opportunity to spend a period of time living and working in another country.

What advantages does this development have for companies?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Currently a number of organizations provide opportunities for their staff to work and live abroad for a specific period. This practice provides benefits for both employee and employer. One of the main benefits is that employees get the opportunity to gain international experience and earn a high salary. On the other hand, companies get trained staff and experienced staff.
To begin with, working abroad allows employees to gain international experience. This is because they are working with industry experts. Also, this allows them to get a solid understanding of the current market trends. Additionally, workers can earn high wages because they are getting their salaries in foreign currency. For example, in Sri Lanka, people who work in US companies earn their salaries in US dollars, while others get their salaries in Sri Lankan rupees.
When it comes to the organizations, they get well-trained staff because employees working with experts gain more knowledge and also more understanding of the international market. Hence, this practice opens new opportunities for the firms. For instance, tech companies in Sri Lanka provide opportunities for their employees to work and live in the USA for a one year period. This practice allows them to attract more projects because of their trained staff.
In conclusion, today many foreign companies send their employees to work and live in other countries. This generates benefits for both the employee and the company. Employees can get foreign work experience and higher income while companies get trained and experienced staff. This is a win-win situation for both parties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both why the opportunity is good for employees and what advantages it has for companies. The position is clear throughout the text. Ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of tech companies in Sri Lanka sending employees to the USA for a one-year period. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of employee benefits could be expanded with deeper insights into professional growth rather than just salary and basic experience. Nevertheless, the requirements of the prompt are sufficiently covered, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor for addressing all parts of the task, with clear relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, such as employee benefits in the second paragraph and company advantages in the third. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'When it comes to the organizations', and 'Hence' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical or formulaic. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure guides the reader smoothly through the argument, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 6 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'international experience', 'foreign currency', and 'win-win situation'. Word choice is generally appropriate and communication is not impeded by lexical errors. However, there is some repetition of vocabulary—for instance, the phrases 'trained staff', 'experienced staff', and 'opportunities' are repeated frequently across the paragraphs. The lack of more sophisticated or varied synonyms keeps the lexical range at a competent Band 6 level rather than pushing into higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'This is because they are working with industry experts' and 'people who work in US companies earn their salaries in US dollars'. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'for a one year period' (which should be 'for a one-year period') and 'get their salaries' repeated multiple times. However, punctuation is generally sound, and the errors do not impede communication. The control over grammar reflects a typical Band 6 performance where simple structures are handled well and complex attempts show minor flaws.
