Student answer (Band 6.5)

Currently a number of organizations provide opportunities for their staff to work and live abroad for a specific period. This practice provides benefits for both the employee and the employer. One of the main benefits is that employees get the opportunity to gain international experience and earn a high salary. On the other hand, companies get trained staff and experienced staff.

To begin with, working abroad allows employees to gain international experience. This is because they are working with industry experts. Also, this allows them to get a solid understanding of the current market trends. Additionally, workers can earn high wages because they are getting their salaries in foreign currency. For example, in Sri Lanka, people who work in US companies earn their salaries in US dollars, while others get their salaries in Sri Lankan rupees.

When it comes to the organizations, they get well-trained staff because employees working with experts gain more knowledge and also more understanding of the international market. Hence, this practice opens new opportunities for the firms. For instance, tech companies in Sri Lanka provide opportunities for their employees to work and live in the USA for a one year. This practice allows them to attract more projects because of their trained staff.

In conclusion, today many foreign companies send their employees to work and live in other countries. This generates benefits for both the employee and the company. Employees can get foreign work experience and higher income while companies get trained and experienced staff. This is a win-win situation for both parties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by exploring both why the opportunity is beneficial for employees and the advantages it brings to companies. The writer establishes a clear position from the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the mention of tech companies in Sri Lanka sending employees to the USA for a year. However, some arguments, such as earning a high salary or gaining market trends, could have been elaborated further to reach a higher band. Overall, the prompt is fully satisfied with clear, relevant, and supported arguments that meet all task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to employee benefits and company advantages respectively, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as "To begin with", "Additionally", and "When it comes to the organizations". Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While referencing and linking words are generally clear, some transitions can feel a bit mechanical or formulaic, preventing the score from reaching the higher bands where cohesion is completely natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as "organizations", "international experience", "current market trends", and "foreign currency". There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and repetitions are noticeable, such as repeating "staff" and "opportunities" frequently within short spans. Minor inaccuracies also appear, such as writing "for a one year" instead of "for one year" or "for a year". However, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the ideas clearly and appropriately for a general professional topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully uses subordinate clauses and complex structures, such as "This is because they are working with industry experts" and "while others get their salaries in Sri Lankan rupees". There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, notably "for a one year" and minor prepositional slips, but these errors do not impede communication. The majority of the simple sentences are accurate, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the text.
