Student answer (Band 4.5)

Nowadays, many large international companies give their employees the opportunity to live and work in another country for some time. This can be a valuable experience because employees can learn about a new culture, improve their communication skills, and gain international work experience. They can also meet new people and understand different ways of working. However, living in a foreign country can sometimes be difficult because of language barriers, homesickness, and cultural differences. Overall, working abroad can help employees grow both personally and professionally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt, discussing why the opportunity is good for employees and what advantages companies gain. However, the task requirement explicitly states that candidates must write at least 250 words, and this response falls significantly short at only 214 words. Due to this negative word count penalty, the development of ideas is constrained. While the first paragraph offers clear points regarding culture and communication, the second paragraph is underdeveloped, highly repetitive, and relies on vague assertions rather than well-supported examples. Consequently, the ideas cannot be fully extended as required for higher bands, placing this performance at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response shows some basic organization with a clear introductory paragraph, but overall coherence breaks down considerably in the second half. The first paragraph flows relatively well, but the second paragraph consists of a massive, run-on block of text with virtually no punctuation, making the logical progression difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, relying heavily on repetitive conjunctions like 'soo' and 'and'. Paragraphing is neglected, as the body of the essay merges into an unstructured jumble. Referencing is also unclear at times, such as ambiguous pronoun usage. Overall, this demonstrates features of Band 4.0 due to the lack of coherent arrangement in the second paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The student demonstrates a limited, basic vocabulary range with frequent repetition of common words such as 'company', 'work', 'new', and 'good'. There are several word choice errors and non-standard expressions, such as 'gave opportunities to there employe' and 'get new environment'. Spelling mistakes are prevalent throughout the second paragraph, including 'employe', 'wtih', 'soo', 'there' (used for 'their'), and 'leaves' (used for 'leave'). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts in the first paragraph, the persistent lexical and spelling errors across the text restrict the overall score to Band 4.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures and repetitive coordinate clauses joined by 'and' or 'so'. Attempts at complex structures are absent or poorly constructed, resulting in fragmented or run-on sentences, particularly in the unpunctuated second paragraph. There are frequent and systematic errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement ('staff dont leaves', 'companies r'), and punctuation. These errors often cause strain for the reader and obscure the intended meaning, matching the descriptors for a Band 4.0 performance.
