Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many international companies give their employees the opportunity to live and work in another country for a certain period. This can be highly beneficial for both workers and organisations because it provides valuable personal and professional experience.

For employees, working abroad can improve their professional skills and cultural understanding. Living in a different country requires people to communicate with colleagues from different backgrounds, adapt to new working methods and solve unfamiliar problems. As a result, employees can become more confident and independent. They might also learn a foreign language, which can increase their future career opportunities. For instance, an Indian employee working for a technology company in Germany may develop international experience as well as a better understanding of European customers and business practices.

Companies can also gain several advantages to sending their staff overseas. Firstly, employees who have international experience can bring new ideas and knowledge back to their home offices. This can help companies improve their products, services and working practices. Secondly, overseas assignments can strengthen relationships with international customers and business partners because employees understand the local culture and market more effectively. For instance, a company that sends its marketing manager to Japan may gain a deeper understanding of Japanese consumer preferences and use this knowledge to develop more suitable marketing strategies.

In conclusion, international work opportunities can help employees develop skills, confidence and cultural awareness, while companies can benefit from employees' international knowledge, stronger business relationships and improved understanding of foreign markets. Therefore, this development can create valuable opportunities for both sides.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by exploring both why the opportunity is beneficial for employees and what advantages it presents for companies. The student maintains a clear position throughout the essay and supports main ideas with relevant explanations and helpful examples, such as the Indian employee in technology and the marketing manager sent to Japan. The ideas are well-developed and directly answer the prompt's requirements, meeting all the expectations of Band 7.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a clear introduction, followed by well-structured body paragraphs discussing employees and companies respectively, and finishing with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For employees', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is skilfully managed, ensuring a smooth flow of ideas that aligns with the descriptors for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items like 'organisations', 'intercultural awareness', 'consumer preferences', and 'business practices'. Word choice is generally appropriate and natural, although there is a minor preposition slip in the third paragraph ('advantages to sending' instead of 'advantages to sending' or 'advantages of sending'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task, easily securing a Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The student successfully incorporates subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'Living in a different country requires people to communicate...' and '...while companies can benefit from employees' international knowledge...'. There is good overall control of grammar and punctuation with frequent error-free sentences, though minor slips occur, such as the slight grammatical awkwardness in 'advantages to sending'. These minor issues do not impede communication, placing the writing comfortably at Band 7.0.
