Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many large international companies provide their staff with opportunities to work and live in another country to boost productivity. I believe that working in another country could bring several benefits to employees and companies. This essay will elaborate on both viewpoints and opinion with relevant explanations.

On the one hand, working and living in a different country could benefit employees in several ways. The foremost is that it provides convenience and creates a great opportunity to learn about different work cultures. For instance, employees who work in Paris could easily understand the work ethic. Moreover, it helps them become more independent and responsible. When they tend to work in another city, they are more likely to learn new techniques and improve communication skills.

On the other hand, companies also get many benefits from this system. The main advantage is that workers can work in any international company, which helps them to grow very easily. In addition, companies also attract talented staff who want to pursue their career in foreign countries. For example, medical professionals choose to be part of a multinational hospital to learn different surgical techniques.

In conclusion, working and living in different countries would be beneficial for both the company and employees because they can learn skills and gain an advantage in getting a promotion and allow the business to grow at a global level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both questions and give a clear overall view that the opportunity benefits employees and companies. Relevant points include learning about work cultures, becoming more independent, and attracting talented staff. However, several ideas are only briefly stated or unclear: “provides convenience” is not explained, and the claim that employees “can work in any international company” does not clearly show how overseas placements benefit the company. The examples, such as working in Paris and medical professionals learning surgical techniques, are relevant but need more explanation of their impact. The response also falls 23 words short of the required minimum. Develop each main point with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and a specific example to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for employee and company benefits, and a conclusion. The progression from one side of the question to the other is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some flexibility in organising the response. However, the linking can feel formulaic, and connections between individual claims are sometimes unclear—for example, the move from working abroad to “work in any international company” does not explain the relationship. Use more precise referencing and transitions that show how each example supports the point, rather than relying mainly on standard signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “work cultures,” “independent,” “communication skills,” “talented staff,” and “surgical techniques.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt some topic-specific language. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “provides convenience” does not clearly express a benefit of living and working abroad, while “grow very easily” and “gain an advantage in getting a promotion” sound vague or unnatural. “Another city” also does not accurately convey the international move described in the task. Aim for more precise phrases such as “develop professionally,” “gain international experience,” and “improve their promotion prospects,” and check that each expression fits its context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because they can learn skills” and “who want to pursue their career.” Most sentences are understandable, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical issues remain, but they rarely prevent communication. For example, “employees who work in Paris could easily understand the work ethic” would be clearer with a specific article or plural form (“the local work ethic” or “work practices”), and “allow the business to grow” does not align smoothly with the preceding subject “they can learn skills and gain an advantage.” The phrase “both viewpoints and opinion” also has an awkward number relationship. Practise parallel structures and check articles, agreement, and sentence links when revising.
