Student answer (Band 6.5)

These days, multinational companies allow their employees to live and work abroad for a certain period of time. This arrangement can benefit employees by broadening their cultural understanding and enhancing their professional skills, while companies can gain valuable international experience and strengthen their position in overseas markets.

To begin with the positives for staff members, they can explore the cultures of different nations by living there and working in foreign companies. It not only benefits them for personal growth but also helps them gain valuable knowledge about their field. They have the opportunity to work with business experts, by applying that experience in their current role, they can get promotions and a competitive salary. Therefore, residing and working in foreign country serves as an excellent platform for employees.

On the other hand, if companies send their employees overseas, they can maintain their professional relationships and can get popularity in global markets. In this way, they can attract more customers, thereby increasing their sales and profitability. Also, if their employees have multinational expertise, they can help to boost the overall growth and reputation of the company. Because they can collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds and participate in international projects. Therefore, it is a win-win situation for both the companies and employees.

To conclude, to gain valuable experience and international expertise, it is beneficial to live and work in another country. It not only helps in growth of a business by expanding its revenue but also helps employees to promote from their current role to higher positions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions and maintains a clear overall position: overseas placements can benefit employees’ development and help companies grow internationally. The employee section gives relevant benefits, including cultural understanding, professional knowledge and possible promotion; the company section explains how international expertise may support customer attraction, sales and reputation. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the link between working with experts and earning a competitive salary is not developed, and the company’s “professional relationships” are mentioned without explaining how these relationships are maintained or used. Add a specific example and explain the cause-and-effect links more fully to make the ideas more convincing and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for employees and companies, and a conclusion. The progression between the two sides of the question is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with” and “On the other hand” help orient the reader. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical or unclear. In the employee paragraph, “They have the opportunity to work with business experts, by applying that experience…” joins ideas in a way that obscures their relationship. The company paragraph also begins a sentence with “Because” that depends on the preceding sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary transitions so that connections are precise rather than relying mainly on familiar signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Vocabulary is adequate for discussing international work and business, and the response attempts some topic-specific expressions, including “multinational expertise,” “global markets,” “profitability” and “diverse backgrounds.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but some wording is imprecise or does not collocate naturally. For instance, “get popularity in global markets” is not the usual way to describe a company becoming better known, and “promote from their current role” does not express the employee’s advancement accurately. “Foreign companies” may also suggest working for a different employer, rather than being posted abroad by one’s own company. Choose more precise business and career expressions, and check that phrases fit the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a contrast clause (“while companies can gain…”) and a conditional construction (“if companies send their employees overseas”). Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not generally prevent communication. Some sentence construction and punctuation issues remain, however. “They have the opportunity to work with business experts, by applying that experience…” incorrectly links two clauses with a comma; separate the ideas or connect them with a suitable conjunction. “Because they can collaborate…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, so it should be joined to the previous sentence. Articles are also missing in “in foreign country” and “helps in growth of a business.” More consistent control of clause boundaries and articles would improve accuracy.
