Student answer (Band 6.0)

I totally agree with that. The opportunity to spend a certain time period abroad will benefit both companies and their staffs. I used to work for an IT training company and they used to select employees based on their performance and send them abroad. The company consider this as a win-win situation.

For the employees, this is a golden opportunity to get foreign experience, training and a better lifestyle. They are going to work in an entirely different environment where they got to meet new people from different cultures and get new experiences. Foreign experiences are valued everywhere because they would be able to thrive in a multi-cultural work environment. Employees would gain more knowledge and expertise from abroad and they bring that back to the company.

For the companies, they will get a more experienced employee who is able to handle a lot more work now. This also affect employee retention rate which will affect the long-term running of the company. The company will get profited from those well trained and experienced employees. Along with that, those employees now know more techniques that they use in those countries and they will incorporate that to the work they are doing. That means the company will attain a smoother workflow.

As I mentioned earlier, my company made a huge turnover that year by implimenting new techniques to get the work done in a limited time. The company gained profit and the employees who bring the idea got promoted.

So, I think this is a great way to attain the goal of both the companies and employees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both questions and maintains a clear, relevant position: overseas placements benefit employees through experience and training, and companies through improved skills and working practices. The personal example about the IT training company also supports the discussion, particularly the account of new techniques contributing to turnover and promotion. These features make the response more than a general list of claims. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, “a better lifestyle” is not developed, and the link between overseas work and employee retention is mentioned without showing why staff are more likely to stay. To strengthen the response further, explain these benefits with specific cause-and-effect reasoning and develop each example more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The organisation is clear and appropriate: the opening introduces the position, separate paragraphs discuss employees and companies, and the final paragraph gives a personal example before concluding. Signposting such as “For the employees,” “For the companies,” and “As I mentioned earlier” helps readers follow the progression. The ideas generally connect logically, especially the sequence from gaining expertise abroad to bringing it back to the company. At times, however, links are mechanical or unclear. “This also affect employee retention rate which will affect the long-term running” repeats “affect,” while “Along with that” does not specify precisely how the preceding point relates. Use more varied transitions and make references such as “this” explicit to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “multi-cultural work environment,” “employee retention rate,” and “smoother workflow” show attempts to use topic-specific language. Meaning remains understandable throughout. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or informal, limiting precision: “the company will get profited” is not idiomatic, “made a huge turnover” does not clearly express the intended financial result, and “golden opportunity” is somewhat conversational. There is also a spelling error in “implimenting.” Aim for more natural business vocabulary and check word forms and spelling; for example, describe a company as “benefiting” or “increasing its profits,” and distinguish turnover from profit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, including relative clauses (“employees who bring the idea got promoted”) and a conditional-style explanation of how skills transfer back to the company. The main message is generally clear, but grammatical control is uneven, with errors in agreement, tense, and sentence construction. For instance, “The company consider” should use a singular verb, and “This also affect” needs agreement; “where they got to meet” shifts awkwardly from the surrounding future-oriented discussion. The sentence beginning “Along with that, those employees now know…” also has an unclear structure. Review subject–verb agreement and maintain consistent tense, then revise longer sentences so each clause has a clear grammatical relationship.
