IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I hope this email finds well! I would like to express my gratitude to the company for providing me you as my mentor.
Initially to begin with my main purpose of writing this email today is, to built a small rapport between us also I wanted to introduce myself to you. You are familiar with my name still, I would like to state my name is Julie chaurasia. I have completed my diploma degree from Canada in Business - Marketing. I had been working with Brookfield Properties as an Assistant tenant service manager, It was a great two years of experience.
I to like to bring this to your attention that as the job market in Canada is highly competitive and as new comer and just with a diploma degree it was really tough to land a job in my field but through applying at multiple MNCs and get constructive feedbacks, today I finally got selected at EY my dream company. Richard it would great head start if you could explain me the work culture along with the expectations that I need to fulfill.
Even though, I don't start work until next week I would really like knowing you in person so that I could overcome my first experience fear before joining. How about having a cup of Coffee together on Saturday at 5 PM.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Thanking You,
Julie Chaurasia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task requirements by introducing the writer, explaining their background, and proposing a meeting with the mentor. However, the tone is inconsistent. While the purpose is clear, some parts of the content, such as the detailed explanation of the job market in Canada, are slightly tangential to the primary goal of establishing a professional relationship with a mentor. The letter successfully covers all necessary points, but the development of ideas could be more focused on the professional mentorship aspect rather than personal job-hunting history. Overall, the response is functional and achieves the communicative purpose effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Initially', 'Even though', and 'Looking forward to', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'Initially to begin with'. The referencing is generally clear, although the flow between the introduction and the background information could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the professional context, and the call to action, which aids the overall structure of the email.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their professional background and intentions clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'built a small rapport' and 'overcome my first experience fear'. While the writer attempts to use more specific professional terminology like 'MNCs' and 'work culture', there are minor inaccuracies in collocation. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning without causing confusion, and the range is broad enough to cover the requirements of a formal email.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope this email finds well' (missing object), 'to built' (incorrect verb form), and 'explain me' (missing preposition). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall understanding of the message. The writer demonstrates an attempt to use complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent, leading to the occasional error that affects the fluency of the writing.
