IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Artificial intelligence has changed the way students learn. While some people argue that significant rise in the use of AI in education may negatively affect the students' learning, I partly disagree with this view because, although AI-based platforms have a few consequences, they provides learner with access to a wide range of academic resources.
One of the major disadvantages of relying heavily on AI is that it weakens students' critical thinking skills. Since AI can instantly provide complete answers, many students stop analyzing information independently. Consequently, they miss opportunities to evaluate ideas and develop logical reasoning. For instance, students who regularly use AI for their assignments may struggle in examinations because they have not actively engaged in the learning process. Furthermore, artificial intelligence can have a negative impact on communication between students and teachers. Excessive use of AI-based learning tools can reduce face-to-face interaction between teachers and learners, which can result in a gradual decline in effective communication skills.
Despite these drawbacks, artificial intelligence also has several advantages for students' education. One compelling benefit of AI is that pupils can access a wide range of educational information easily. When students complete their academic tasks, they can benefit from AI-based platforms by exploring a wide rage of topics. As a result, this can make the learning process straightforward. For example, a student who places greater emphasis on AI-based tools can meet academic requirements easily than their classmates who use AI tools occasionally. Another benefit of AI is that it provides students with 24/7 learning support. Many AI-based applications can act as virtual tutors, enabling them to ask questions and practices outside school hours. This can lead to greater flexibility and accessibility.
In conclusion, while artificial intelligence offers certain disadvantages, particularly in terms of weakening students' critical thinking abilities and reducing communication between teachers and students, I believe it also has advantages for students, such as better flexibility and providing access to a wide range of academic materials easily.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of AI in education. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are generally well-developed. However, the response is actually an essay rather than a General Training Task 1 (which typically requires a letter). Assuming this was intended as an essay, the task is fulfilled. The arguments regarding critical thinking and accessibility are logical and supported with relevant examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that the depth of analysis is consistent across all points, as some explanations, such as the comparison between students, could be more precisely articulated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Furthermore', and 'Despite these drawbacks' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific language like 'academic resources', 'logical reasoning', and 'virtual tutors'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'wide rage' (typo) and 'meet academic requirements easily than' (grammatical error in comparison). While you attempt to use a range of vocabulary, it does not consistently reach the level of 'less common items' with high precision. Improving the accuracy of collocations would help elevate this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. For example, 'they provides learner' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'meet academic requirements easily than' (incorrect comparative structure). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent a higher band. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that comparative structures are fully formed.
