IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Kim,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to let you know that I am coming to your city for a business trip and I am hoping to do some sightseeing during my free time with you.

Our ABC company wants to open another location in your city. They want me to visit and arrange a meeting with clients. Afterward, to ensure the demand for our business there, we will start the process officially.

I will have some time during this trip, as I will stay in your city for a while after the meeting. This will allow me to understand their thoughts on our business. I need your help to visit different places where I can meet new people and also explore new places in your city.

I would like to invite you to my apartment for a reunion. It's been a long time, We haven't spent time together since you came here for your job. This is the time to recall all the memories with some snacks and drinks.

I am so excited to see you soon. Thank you for being such a great friend.

Your best friend,

Puneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response clearly covers all the requirements of a friendly letter. You have successfully explained the reason for your upcoming business trip, mentioned your intention to meet up for sightseeing, asked for help visiting different places, and invited your friend to your apartment for a reunion. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter to Kim, and the ideas are extended well with details about the business purpose and catching up. Although the prompt details were invented since the task prompt was empty, you created a completely coherent scenario that satisfies standard general task 1 requirements for purpose, tone, and functional requirements. Your ideas are well developed throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard email conventions for a friendly letter. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the business context in the second paragraph, the request for help in the third, and the invitation in the fourth. Cohesive devices are handled well, using transitional phrases like 'Our ABC company', 'Afterward', and 'This will allow me' to connect ideas smoothly. The progression of thoughts is clear, and referencing between sentences is well managed, making the letter easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'business trip', 'sightseeing', 'arrange a meeting', and 'recall all the memories' communicate your message effectively. There are a few slightly awkward collocations, such as 'ensure the demand for our business', but meaning remains completely clear. You attempt some less common items like 'reunion' and 'sightseeing' with general success. Spelling and word choice are mostly accurate throughout the piece.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to let you know that I am coming...' and 'This will allow me to understand their thoughts...'. The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, with good control over tense usage for future plans and past reflections. There is a minor punctuation slip in the fourth paragraph ('long time, We haven't spent') where a comma is used instead of a full stop or semicolon before a capital letter, but this does not impede communication. Overall control of grammar is solid.
