IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear College Coordinator,

I am writing regarding the upcoming International Day at our college. I am very interested in volunteering for this event and would like to suggest an activity that could make the day more enjoyable for everyone.

I would like to organise a traditional food and cultural display. Students from various countries could prepare small samples of their traditional dishes and explain their culture significance to other students. Moreover,we could display traditional clothes, photographs and cultural items. By doing this, students would get a chance to know about difffernt cultures and interact with one another.

I would be happy to help with arranging the food stallls, decorations and displays. However,I would really appreciate it if you could provide the futher information about the event, particularly the date, available facilities and the responsiblities expected from the volunteers.

Thank you for considering my suggestion.I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has effectively addressed all parts of the formal letter writing task. The purpose of writing is clearly stated in the opening paragraph, which mentions volunteering for the International Day and offering a suggestion. The second paragraph details the proposed activity, specifically a traditional food and cultural display, and the third paragraph successfully covers the secondary requirements by asking for further information regarding dates, facilities, and volunteer responsibilities. The tone is appropriately polite, consistent, and formal throughout, fitting the intended recipient of a college coordinator. All bullet points implied by the prompt are fully covered and well-extended, leading to a strong band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized into well-defined paragraphs that follow a clear chronological and structural progression. The opening states the purpose, the body outlines the suggestion and its benefits, and the final paragraph discusses practical logistics before a standard polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'By doing this', and 'However', which help link ideas smoothly without being intrusive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, ensuring the reader follows the correspondence with ease. Referencing pronouns like 'this' and 'they' are clearly managed.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for a semi-formal or formal request. Words and phrases such as 'volunteer', 'cultural display', 'interact with one another', and 'responsibilities expected' show a solid grasp of topic-related terminology. However, there are a few minor lexical slips and spelling errors, such as 'culture significance' (should be cultural significance) and 'difffernt' (different). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is flexible enough to allow clear communication and meets the expectations of a competent band 7 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional or participial phrases like 'By doing this, students would get a chance...' and 'I would really appreciate it if you could provide...'. The majority of sentences are grammatically sound and error-free, with good control over verb tenses and modals (e.g., 'would be happy', 'could prepare'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though minor mechanical slips appear, such as missing spaces after commas in 'moreover,we' and 'clothes, photographs'. These minor errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, placing the writing comfortably in the band 7 range.
