IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Singh,

I am writing to suggest some positive improvements that I believe would help attract more young individuals.

Firstly, I believe converting conventional theory-based sports lessons into practical sports training would provide younger people an opportunity to improve their overall well-being. In addition, introducing cricket would be an effective way to take a break from tehir busy daily routines, and would attrcat the attention of the young people.

I am certain that these improvements would be valuable to the club in several ways. They would provide individuals with an opportunity to participate in physical activity and improve their lifespan in a healthier way. Moreover, cricket can help them manage stress and imporve their mental well-being

To promote the club, I would like to suggest offering a few activities without charge to those who will register the membership for the first time. The club can organize free health awareness campaigns highlighting the significance of sports activities and negative consequences of sedentary lifestyles for new members.

I sincerely hope you will take my recommendations into consideration. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my suggestions. I look forward to hearing your views on these proposals.

Yours sincerely,

Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the purpose of the letter well by suggesting improvements to attract younger individuals and offering promotional ideas. The ideas are relevant and generally well developed, such as converting theory-based sports lessons into practical training and introducing cricket. However, the exact context of the club is slightly generalized since the prompt specifics were absent, but the student manages to sustain an appropriate tone and purpose throughout. The purpose is clearly communicated, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific proposals, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'To promote the club' are used effectively to guide the reader through the points. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the proposal. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating appropriate terms such as 'conventional', 'theory-based', 'well-being', and 'sedentary lifestyles'. There are a few spelling and typographical errors, notably 'tehir' instead of 'their' and 'imporve' instead of 'improve'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended message with reasonable precision, placing the response securely in the Band 6.5 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to suggest some positive improvements that I believe would help attract more young individuals.' and 'The club can organize free health awareness campaigns highlighting the significance of sports activities...' There are occasional grammatical inaccuracies and typos, but the majority of sentences are clear and correct, and communication is never impeded. Control over grammar and punctuation aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
