IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this to give feedback to your company's service, which I recently got. It was very satisfying and convenient to work with your company.

Everything was going smoothly and hustless on the day I moved my house. At first I worried about my decorative items and furniture which are very valuable and some of them are antique pieces around hundreds years old so it would be very crucial for me to transferred carefully and in the same condition.

Your all staff members did well as per my expectation and have helping nature. I would like to appreciate the work of 'Pitter' one of employee of your company. He was very passionate and dedicating towards his work. I have impressed by his service that how he carefully treated each and every items of the house.

As experienced customer I would like to leads your attention towards reception department, which required improvement. The service of the department was poor. As I called multiple time for conformation of time, I could not answered on a time. The behavior of the staff of that department was quite inappropriate. Only the glitch I felt.

Overall experience to get service from your company is great. I recommend it to my many friends and relatives. Once again thank you.

Kind regards

Kajal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers the main purpose of the letter, which is to provide feedback on a company's moving service. The writer successfully highlights both the positive aspects of the move—such as the careful handling of antique items and the helpful staff member 'Pitter'—and the negative aspects, specifically the poor service and inappropriate behavior encountered at the reception department. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint and appreciation letter, maintaining a clear position throughout. While some ideas, such as the reception issues, could be slightly more expanded, all requirements of a general training task of this nature are adequately met. The response clearly identifies the recipient as the manager and structures the feedback constructively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, progressing logically from the introduction to the positive feedback, the negative feedback, and finally the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as the moving day experience, the praise for staff, and the criticism of the reception desk. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with occasional abrupt transitions between paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though certain transitional markers are missing or awkward, such as starting the final paragraph with 'Overall experience to get service.' Despite these minor mechanical flaws, the progression of ideas remains easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'antique pieces' and 'passionate and dedicating.' However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations that detract from precision, such as 'hustless' instead of 'hassle-free,' 'transferred carefully' instead of 'transferred carefully,' and 'I have impressed' instead of 'I was impressed.' Spelling slips also occur, such as 'conformation' instead of 'confirmation' and 'Pitter' likely being a misspelling of Peter. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the band 6 profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structures with relative clauses (e.g., 'decorative items and furniture which are very valuable'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, voice, and prepositions, such as 'service, which I recently got,' 'it would be very crucial for me to transferred,' and 'I could not answered on a time.' Punctuation is generally functional, but missing articles and incorrect tense usages are noticeable throughout. While these errors do not completely obscure the message, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score.
