IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam

I'm writing this letter to introduce myself and my previous work experience, and to express my pleasure at having you as my mentor. I recently joined this hospital as a PSW, and I want to work with you to develop professionally.

Regarding my background, I completed my B.Sc nursing a four-year degree from back home in India. Later, I moved to Canada to study Healthcare administration and service management. I worked with an agency named 'Home Instead' as a PSW, where I used to provide them basic care such as grooming, pericare, feeding, and exercising. I have strong skills in providing patient care, documentation, and teamwork.

However, I need your guidance and supervision to safely transfer the patient between areas using the latest transfer tools and manual transfer techniques.

I would be grateful if you could arrange a meeting any time after 2 on weekends, in a cafeteria or in your office, whichever is convenient for you.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you

Yours faithfully

Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully covers all the required points of the prompt, including introducing the writer's background, expressing pleasure about the mentor relationship, detailing past work experience, and proposing a meeting time. The purpose of the letter is clear and maintained throughout. The ideas are relevant and appropriately developed for a General Training Task 1 letter, fulfilling the communicative purpose effectively. The tone is polite and professional, which is appropriate for a workplace communication directed to a mentor. Therefore, the response satisfies the requirements for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphs are used appropriately to separate different themes, such as background introduction, past experience, specific training needs, and the call to action for a meeting. Cohesive devices like 'Regarding my background' and 'However' are used reasonably well to guide the reader. Although referencing is mostly clear, paragraph transitions could be slightly smoother to reach higher band thresholds. Overall, the structural flow is coherent and meets the descriptors for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, incorporating professional healthcare terminology such as 'Healthcare administration', 'grooming', 'pericare', and 'manual transfer techniques'. There are attempts at less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, though some choices like 'B.Sc nursing a four-year degree' show minor clumsiness. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, supporting a solid Band 6.5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'I recently joined this hospital as a PSW, and I want to work with you to develop professionally.' However, minor grammatical inaccuracies exist, such as 'completed my B.Sc nursing a four-year degree' which lacks structural smoothness, and missing punctuation in contractions like 'I'm'. These errors do not impede communication and align well with the Band 6.5 descriptors.
