IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to introduce myself after I recieved an email that you are my mentor. It is a privilege to be able to learn from your experience and the plethora of knowledge you possess.

I would like to share my education and work experience first. I graduated two years ago from FAST NUCES karachi campus in fall 2024. My major was computer science with a minor in computer systems. I landed a three month internship at systems limited where I worked on backend systems and API integration. In the next eighteen months I found myself working in FOLIO3 as a junior software developer where I worked on NodeJS and client consultation.

I would be grateful if you could introduce me to our product catalogue so I can start researching and be familiar with it. Moreover, an introduction of the workplace and the organisational culture would make me feel like at home.

I would be grateful if you could share your available time slots for tomorrow. I am available the day after tomorrow as well incase it is inconvenient for you tomorrow. Looking forward to learning from you and working with you.

Yours faithfully,

Muhammad Ali Noorani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all the requirements of the prompt by effectively introducing the writer, sharing relevant educational and work background, asking pertinent questions about the product catalogue and workplace culture, and scheduling a meeting. The tone is appropriate for a formal email to a mentor, and the ideas are fully developed and extended logically across the paragraphs. The transition from university life to internship and junior developer roles is clearly articulated, providing the mentor with a comprehensive overview of the student's professional journey. There are no omissions or irrelevant details, demonstrating a strong understanding of the communicative purpose of the task. Therefore, this fulfills the criteria for a high band performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organised into clear, distinct paragraphs that each serve a specific communicative purpose, beginning with the introduction, moving into background details, addressing requests, and concluding with next steps. Cohesive devices such as 'first', 'Moreover', and referencing pronouns are used effectively to guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring that ideas do not bleed into one another. While the progression of ideas is clear throughout, the use of cohesive devices is slightly straightforward rather than sophisticated, placing the performance comfortably within the band seven descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating discipline-specific terms such as 'computer science', 'backend systems', 'API integration', and 'client consultation'. Less common phrasal items and collocations are attempted, such as 'plethora of knowledge' and 'organisational culture', showing an awareness of style and register suitable for a professional introduction. There are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as the spelling error 'recieved' instead of 'received', but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary range is adequate to convey precise meanings, aligning well with the expectations of this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer exhibits a good control of grammar and punctuation, utilising a variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences. Examples include 'It is a privilege to be able to learn from your experience...' and 'I would be grateful if you could introduce me to our product catalogue so I can start researching...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, with only a few minor slips such as missing capitalization on proper nouns like 'karachi' and 'systems limited'. Punctuation is generally handled well, though commas could be placed more consistently after introductory prepositional phrases. Grammatical accuracy remains high throughout the entire text.
