Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Kevin,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to guide me for the course of my job at this workplace.
I received an email from the manager last week regarding the mentorship program to which I am designated to be working under your supervision.
I have completed my Bachelors degree at Manipal University, Mangalore in the year 2023. I have a solid experience of 3 years in the field of radiology. I worked at KMCH Hospital, Coimbatore, a reputed hospital in the city offering great patient care and service. During my course of work, I learnt several radiological procedures and I am familiar with most of the procedures that are performed in our hospital.
Since I am a newcomer to this hospital, I require your guidance on the working culture of this hospital. You can assist me on getting to know all the staff at KG Hospital quicker. I would be grateful if you can teach me the study of Cardiac MRI which the manager suggested to learn it from you.
I would be delighted if it's possible to have a conversation with you in the coming weekend at the Ron Cafe.
Yours sincerely
John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You have successfully covered all bullet points required in the prompt. You introduced yourself appropriately, gave a brief and relevant outline of your previous studies at Manipal University and work experience in radiology, and explained what help you hope your mentor can provide regarding the hospital working culture and Cardiac MRI studies. Furthermore, you successfully suggested clear arrangements for a first meeting at the Ron Cafe during the coming weekend. The tone is polite, appropriate for a professional workplace context, and meets all communicative goals of a General Training Task 1 letter. You have fully achieved the task requirements, placing your writing comfortably at Band 8.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the prompt requirements, such as background information, mentoring needs, and meeting suggestions. You used appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices well. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive or slightly awkward, such as repeating 'this hospital' multiple times in close proximity ('newcomer to this hospital', 'working culture of this hospital'). While paragraphing is used sufficiently and transitions are generally smooth, these minor cohesive limitations keep the score at Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary relevant to your profession, such as 'radiology', 'radiological procedures', and 'patient care'. There are some good lexical choices like 'reputed hospital', 'solid experience', and 'grateful'. However, there are a few unnatural collocations and minor slips in word choice, such as writing 'guide me for the course of my job' instead of 'guide me through my job' or 'learn it from you' containing a redundant pronoun. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is entirely adequate to convey precise meaning, supporting a Band 7.0 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrated good control over a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses ('Since I am a newcomer...', 'I would be grateful if you can teach me...'). Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are, however, a few minor grammatical lapses and awkward phrasings, such as 'to which I am designated to be working under your supervision' (which is slightly awkward and blends two different structures) and using 'can' instead of 'could' in polite requests ('if you can teach me'). These occasional inaccuracies are non-systematic and do not impede communication, matching the Band 7.0 descriptors well.
