Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. David,
I am writing to introduce myself as your new mentee at the company. I was very glad to receive your contact details, and I am looking foward to working with you.
To give you a brief background, recently I completed my MBA specializing in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Before joining our team, I worked for 2 years in warehouse and inventory management in my country, Vietnam, where I gained practical experiences in handling daily supply inventory.
As I am new in the company, I really hope you can guide me on our internal workflows and operational systems. Furthermore, I would greatly appreciate your advice on how to adapt as soon as possible company culture, as well as maintaining professional attitude for my career in the future.
If your schedule permits, I would like to suggest a short meeting next Monday at 10 AM. Perhaps we can meet at the company cafeteria or coffee shop nearby. Please let me know if this time works for you.
Thank you very much for your support.
Yours sincerely,
Tan Phat Vu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response fully satisfies all bullet points of the prompt in a natural, polite semi-formal register appropriate for a workplace letter. You successfully outlined your previous studies and work experience by mentioning your MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and your two years working in warehouse and inventory management in Vietnam. Furthermore, you clearly explained the help you hope to receive, asking for guidance on internal workflows, operational systems, and company culture. Finally, you suggested specific arrangements for a first meeting by proposing next Monday at 10 AM at the cafeteria or a nearby coffee shop. The purpose of the letter is clear and sustained throughout, and all ideas are well-developed without any omissions. This aligns well with the descriptors for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Your letter demonstrates a very clear and logical organization. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the prompt requirements, progressing smoothly from the introduction to background details, specific requests for help, and finally the meeting proposal. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively. You make good use of cohesive devices and referencing throughout the text, such as transitional phrases like 'To give you a brief background,' 'Furthermore,' and 'If your schedule permits,' which guide the reader effortlessly through the letter. Cohesion is natural and unobtrusive, supporting clear communication from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a professional context, utilizing domain-specific terms such as 'Supply Chain Management', 'inventory management', 'internal workflows', and 'operational systems'. There are minor collocation slips, such as 'as soon as possible company culture' (which would be more natural as 'company culture as soon as possible' or 'integrating into the company culture') and 'maintaining professional attitude' (missing the article 'a'). However, these vocabulary and collocation choices do not impede communication at all. You successfully attempt less common lexical items with general accuracy and appropriate tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If your schedule permits, I would like to...') and participial phrases ('specializing in Logistics...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation and grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor errors, such as a spelling slip in 'looking foward' (instead of 'forward') and missing articles in phrases like 'adapt as soon as possible company culture' and 'maintaining professional attitude'. Despite these minor slips, your grammatical control is solid and communication flows smoothly without any ambiguity.
