Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. David,
Hope you are doing well, I am writing to make a formal introduction of myself. I am Ahana Shinde, Lead Graphic Designer. I had completed Masters Degree in F.C. Designing from NIFT Kolkata in the yaer 2018. Sebsequently, I had a work experience for about 4 years, In Adidas.
I would be grateful if you could guide me in my tough situations. I have faced issues related to getting approvals on time, I would appriciate if you could handle them by yourself or inform me before the last date of approvals.
I would like to ask weather it would be possible to arrange a meeting with you and also with the whole team on tomorrow. I have already checked that all team members are going to be present tomorrow, therefore it will be a great opprtunity to hold a meeting and introduce to everyone as a mentor. I have also checked about the meeting room, It is also available.
Thankyou for your valuable time. Hoping to get a positive response from you side.
Yours Sincerely,
Ahana Shinde

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully provide an outline of your previous studies and work experience, mentioning your Master's degree in Fashion Communication from NIFT Kolkata and your four years of experience at Adidas. You also explain what help you hope to receive from your mentor, specifically requesting guidance in difficult situations such as securing approvals on time. Furthermore, you suggest practical arrangements for a first meeting with your mentor and the team for tomorrow, noting that the meeting room is available. All parts of the task are addressed adequately and clearly, maintaining an appropriate semi-formal letter format throughout. The tone is polite and professional, making this a solid performance that fully satisfies the requirements of this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing, each addressing a distinct purpose. For instance, the first paragraph introduces you and your background, the second outlines your expectations for mentoring, and the third proposes the meeting arrangements. However, there are some minor cohesive and referencing issues, such as the slightly disjointed flow in sentences like 'I had completed Masters Degree in F.C. Designing from NIFT Kolkata in the yaer 2018. Sebsequently, I had a work experience for about 4 years, In Adidas.' Additionally, phrases like 'It is also available' in the third paragraph create slightly choppy sentences rather than smooth, integrated cohesion. Despite these minor mechanical flaws, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms relevant to your professional background such as 'Lead Graphic Designer', 'work experience', and 'approvals'. However, there are several spelling and typographical errors, including 'yaer', 'Sebsequently', 'appriciate', 'weather' (used instead of whether), and 'opprtunity'. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'handle them by yourself' when referring to workplace approvals, which sounds a bit demanding for a new employee. To achieve a higher band score, you need to eliminate spelling mistakes and use more precise professional collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('I would be grateful if you could guide me...', 'I have already checked that all team members are going to be present...'). However, there are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors that affect accuracy. For example, comma splices and tense inconsistencies appear in sentences like 'Hope you are doing well, I am writing to make...' and 'I had completed... I had a work experience'. Additionally, prepositions are sometimes misused, as in 'work experience... In Adidas.' While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the text from reaching a higher band score due to recurring inaccuracies.
