Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to provide you a brief introduction and previous working background details which can help me to understand working environment.

I completed my bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from the Gujarat university in 2022. After that, I did mandatory one year internship from the government hospital in Gujarat. Then, I started working as a junior physiotherapist in a private clinic. At the same time, I did many freelancing at patient's home. After 2 years, I have joined a private hospital because I want to explore different conditions of patients. Therefore, I have a great experience of various conditions of patients and their effective treatments.

As a new therapist at your clinic, I would be appreciated if you could teach me thorough assessment of patients. Although I treated a number of patients, I am not confident in patients assessment. Therefore, I want to learn assessment part and according treatments.

If you are comfortable, I would be happy to meeting with you as per your convenience so, I can understand general rules and regulations of the clinic.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Looking forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all bullet points outlined in the prompt. You gave a clear outline of your previous studies and work experience, mentioning your bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy, subsequent internship, and clinic experience. You explained what help you hope your mentor can provide by stating that you want to learn thorough patient assessments and corresponding treatments. Additionally, you suggested arrangements for a first meeting by writing, 'I would be happy to meeting with you as per your convenience.' The tone is generally appropriate for a professional introductory letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir' is slightly too formal when addressing an unnamed mentor, given that the prompt asks you to write to 'your mentor - an experienced colleague'. Overall, all parts of the task are adequately covered.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall progression from introducing your background to expressing your expectations and proposing a meeting. Paragraphing is used effectively, with separate paragraphs dedicated to your educational and career background, your learning goals, and the arrangement for the first meeting. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, though there are minor mechanical transitions such as repetitive use of 'Then' and 'Therefore' to link sentences. Referencing is mostly clear, ensuring the reader can follow your professional journey without confusion. While paragraphing and sequencing are logical, the slightly repetitive sentence openings prevent the letter from reaching a higher band in cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task. You use appropriate job-related terms such as 'physiotherapy', 'bachelor's degree', 'internship', and 'junior physiotherapist'. However, there are some inaccurate word choices and awkward collocations. For instance, writing 'provide you a brief introduction and previous working background details' is slightly unnatural, and 'did many freelancing' is grammatically incorrect for a noun phrase (it should be 'did freelance work' or 'did freelancing'). Similarly, 'assessment part and according treatments' shows restricted control over lexical precision. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'If you are comfortable, I would be happy to meeting with you...' However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors. In the opening sentence, 'provide you a brief introduction' should include the preposition 'with'. There is also a tense and article issue in 'mandatory one year internship from the government hospital' (missing an article before 'one year internship', and 'at' is better than 'from'). Most notably, there is a gerund error: 'happy to meeting with you' should be 'happy to meet with you'. Another error is 'I would be appreciated if you could' instead of 'I would appreciate it if you could'. These errors occasionally cause strain, but communication is not impeded.
