Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Ram,

I am writing this letter to arrange a meeting with you. As per the company policy, you have been assigned as a mentor for me. I would like to share my information and suggest a meeting time with you.

I am Subas Bhugai. I have passed my undergraduate degree from Pokhara University, Nepal. Additionally, I have complete a post-graduate certificate on Construction Project Management from Fanshawe college, Canada. I have gathered five years of experience from Topnotch Consultancy, Nepal, where I learned a lot about the projects in rural area.

However, I am new to Canada and need to learn a lot of this from you related to on-site operations, civil design format and most significantly about documentation. As you are a professional engineer with tonnes of experience, I would be grateful to learn all these from you.

As you will be busy with all the supervision work, I would like to have a meeting with you while we have our lunch break. We could share our lunch together with a nice conversation about the work.

Thank you for your consideration. I hope to meet you soon.

Best Regards,

Subas Bhugai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You begin by giving a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience, mentioning your undergraduate degree from Pokhara University, a post-graduate certificate from Fanshawe College, and five years of experience at Topnotch Consultancy. Furthermore, you effectively explain what help you hope your mentor can provide by stating that you need guidance regarding on-site operations, civil design formats, and documentation. Finally, you suggest arrangements for a first meeting by proposing to connect during the lunch break for a conversation over food. The tone is appropriate for a formal yet approachable workplace introduction. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed, and ideas are well-developed, leading to a strong performance in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard correspondence conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as your background, your expectations from the mentor, and the meeting proposal. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, though there are minor mechanical transitions (e.g., 'However, I am new to Canada and need to learn a lot of this from you...'). Progression throughout the letter is clear, allowing the reader to easily follow your purpose and requests. While referencing is mostly clear, a more seamless integration of transitional phrases would elevate the cohesion to a higher standard.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, utilizing appropriate professional terms such as 'undergraduate degree', 'Construction Project Management', 'on-site operations', and 'documentation'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and slightly informal phrasing, such as 'tonnes of experience' (which is too colloquial for a professional letter) and 'complete a post-graduate certificate' instead of 'completed'. Despite these occasional word-choice slips, communication remains clear and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning effectively, representing solid Band 6 performance leaning towards Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well (e.g., 'As you will be busy with all the supervision work, I would like to have a meeting...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors present. For instance, 'I have complete a post-graduate certificate' contains a tense error ('completed' is required), and 'learn a lot of this from you' should be 'learn a lot of these things' or 'learn a great deal from you'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well-controlled, but the minor errors in verb forms prevent a higher score.
