Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points required in the task prompt. The letter begins with an appropriate greeting, although 'Dear Sir' could be improved by using the mentor's name if known, but it is acceptable in a general context. The student provides a clear outline of their previous nursing studies and work experience, explaining that they completed a bachelor's and a master's degree and worked as a staff nurse. Furthermore, the letter clearly explains the expected help, such as advice on professional communication, managing responsibilities, and dealing with challenging situations. Finally, practical arrangements for a first meeting are suggested, specifically proposing next Monday at 3 pm in the staff cafeteria. All parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant and coherent ideas, matching the Band 7 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. The information is divided into logical paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose: introduction and background experience, expectations from the mentor, specific areas of guidance, and meeting arrangements. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, such as 'Regarding our first meeting' to transition to the final point. However, referencing and punctuation have minor mechanical issues, such as missing capitalisation at the start of sentences like 'i recently obtained', and spacing errors before punctuation marks. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining a polite and professional tone throughout the communication, which aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the workplace context, including terms such as 'practical experience', 'patient safety', 'professional communication', and 'challenging situation'. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'depting' instead of 'adapting', 'effciently' instead of 'efficiently', 'camn' instead of 'can', and 'mt' instead of 'my'. Additionally, phrases like 'I am looking from your experience' contain slight prepositional inaccuracies. While these lexical errors and typos do not impede overall communication, they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands, placing this submission comfortably at a Band 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'I have also gained practical experience working as a staff nurse, where I was responsible for patient safety and care, assisting doctors and maintain medical records.' There is a minor grammatical inconsistency here with the verb form 'maintain' instead of 'maintaining'. Several other grammatical and punctuation errors are present, including missing capital letters ('i recently obtained', 'herry'), missing apostrophes in contractions or possessives, and typos ('camn'). Despite these frequent minor errors in punctuation and accuracy, they rarely impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
