Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Festus

My name is Dorcas Fiyinfunoluwa and i just joined the media team of the company earlier this week and you are my assigned mentor.

i worked as an intern at a radio station in my country and was a full time employee for almost 2 years. Having learnt the role of the job i started hosting programmes and vox pop on the street which gets a lot of stir from the audience, i sometimes have a co-host but most times i handle the show on my own.

Moving to a media company which has its own tv and radio section is like a dream come true for me because i have always wanted to be a Tv host. i really enjoy your shows and how confident and charismatic you are and i will really appreciate if you can teach me the nook and cranny of the job

i was wondering if Friday noon is okay for our first meeting since you will be done with your show in the morning.

i look forward to meeting you

Dorcas Fiyinfunoluwa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the prompt well. You successfully provided a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience by mentioning your internship and full-time role at a radio station, explained what help you hope your mentor can give by asking to be taught the intricacies of the job, and suggested arrangements for a first meeting on Friday noon. The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a workplace letter, and the purpose is clearly stated throughout. All bullet points are fully addressed, and ideas are developed naturally. Therefore, this meets the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear logical flow from introduction to background, mentoring expectations, and finally the meeting arrangement. However, the paragraphing is somewhat lacking, as the body of the letter is condensed into large blocks of text rather than being broken down into clear, distinct paragraphs for each bullet point. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or basic, such as frequent reliance on 'and' and 'because' to link clauses. Referencing is generally clear, but punctuation errors at sentence boundaries slightly disrupt the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to media and work, such as 'intern', 'radio station', 'co-host', and 'charismatic'. There are a few imprecise lexical choices or slight idiomatic errors, such as writing 'gets a lot of stir' instead of 'generates a lot of buzz' and 'the nook and cranny' instead of the correct idiom 'the nooks and crannies' or simply 'ins and outs'. Nevertheless, these vocabulary attempts are understandable and do not impede communication, placing this securely in the Band 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial clauses ('Having learnt the role...') and subordinate clauses. However, there are noticeable grammatical and punctuation issues throughout the text, most notably a lack of capitalisation for the pronoun 'i', missing commas, and run-on sentences joined by conjunctions rather than proper punctuation or periods. For example, '...vox pop on the street which gets a lot of stir from the audience, i sometimes have a co-host...' combines multiple ideas without sufficient control. These errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band.
