Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

Hope you are doing well,

I am Radhika Verms, writing this letter to inform you that I am a new employee at the company and you are my assigned mentor. I want to give you some of my background details to help you understand me better. I studied marketing and earned my bachelor's degree in it. Also, I have one year of experience in marketing and one year in customer service.

I hope to get guidance regarding new marketing strategies from you, because I have heard from everyone here in the office that you never neglect the concerns of your employees and help them in difficult situations. There are three more employees who work under you.I also contacted them, they are eagerly waiting to meet with you in person. I have some dates in mind for setting up the first meeting with you as our mentor. I will share the information with you regarding the dates and time, and you can select what is convenient for you.

Your Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a clear and natural manner. The letter successfully gives a brief outline of the writer's previous studies in marketing and work experience ('earned my bachelor's degree in it. Also, I have one year of experience in marketing and one year in customer service'), explains what help is hoped for ('get guidance regarding new marketing strategies from you'), and suggests arrangements for a first meeting ('I will share the information with you regarding the dates and time'). The tone is appropriate for a workplace communication, and all parts of the task are adequately addressed. Therefore, this fulfills the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0, earning a solid Band 7.0 for fully addressing all requirements with clear, relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are introduced logically, moving from an introduction and background to the purpose of the mentorship and finally to meeting arrangements. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Also', 'because', and 'and', although paragraphing could be improved to better separate the distinct points. For instance, combining the mention of other colleagues and the meeting arrangements into a single block creates slightly dense referencing. However, the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow, making this a clear Band 6.5 which rounds appropriately to a Band 6.0 due to somewhat mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general workplace correspondence, including terms like 'bachelor's degree', 'customer service', and 'strategies'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'eagerly waiting' and 'convenient'. Some minor awkwardness occurs, such as 'writing this letter to inform you that I am a new employee' which is slightly unnatural in an informal mentor introduction. However, spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication. The lexical resource matches the descriptors for Band 6.0, as the vocabulary is sufficient for the task with adequate flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I hope to get guidance regarding new marketing strategies from you, because I have heard from everyone here in the office that you never neglect the concerns of your employees'. There are some minor grammatical errors and punctuation issues, notably a comma splice ('I also contacted them, they are eagerly waiting') and a spelling error in the sign-off ('Your Faithfully' instead of 'Yours faithfully'). Despite these slips, the meaning remains entirely clear and communication is not impeded. The grammatical control aligns well with a Band 6.0 descriptor.
