Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am Zara Shaikh, joined as costumer care representative recently. I have studied B.B.A (Hons) and my major was 'Marketing'. I had worked as an internee in 'The luxe Marketing' for six months and 'Kennconnection' for one year. Additionally, I had worked in a call center for two years. I am workaholic as I can work underpressure and can meet the deadlines on time. I am able to resolve costumers issues and satisfy them. Moreover, I am a quick learner.

I am excited to work under your guidance, since I believe having a mentor is beneficial for my career growth. I hope you would help me to understand the environment and policies of the company. Furthermore, advice how to deal with a customer and handle the situation calmly.

For our first meeting, I would like to do some arrangements like discussing my duties, setting clear goals and company's expectation from me. However, it would be better if we have the discussion somewhere quite so that I am able to undestand your point of view. I am looking forward to meeting you in person.

Thank you in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Zara Shaikh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You begin by providing a brief outline of your previous studies and work experience, mentioning your degree in Marketing and internships at 'The luxe Marketing' and 'Kennconnection', along with your call center background. You also clearly explain the help you hope your mentor can provide, such as understanding company policies and learning how to handle customer situations calmly. Finally, you suggest arrangements for a first meeting, mentioning discussing duties and setting goals in a quiet location. The tone is appropriate for an introductory letter to a colleague, fulfilling all communication requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, using appropriate paragraphing to separate your background, expectations, and meeting proposals. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The opening salutation 'Dear Sir,' is a minor misstep given you know the mentor's details, but it does not impede the overall flow. Information is sequenced logically, leading the reader smoothly through your introduction and future plans.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace communication, using terms such as 'guidance', 'career growth', and 'quick learner'. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'costumer' instead of 'customer', 'workaholic as I can work underpressure' (which is slightly awkward and missing spaces), and 'quite' instead of 'quiet'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise collocation would enhance your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter. Examples include 'I am excited to work under your guidance, since I believe having a mentor is beneficial for my career growth.' There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as 'joined as costumer care representative recently' (missing subject 'I have') and fragment sentences like 'Furthermore, advice how to deal with a customer'. While these errors occasionally distract the reader, the majority of sentences communicate your meaning clearly without causing serious misinterpretation.
